Sønderborg Airport (EKSB) lies on the island of Als in South Denmark, close to the town of Sønderborg near the German border. It is a modest regional field offering a single long, ILS-equipped runway, making it a useful and interesting VFR or IFR destination for pilots exploring southern Jutland.

Overview

Sønderborg Airport serves the town of Sønderborg in the Region of Syddanmark (South Denmark), close to the German border. It handles scheduled and charter flights, principally operated by Alsie Express, and its single long paved runway with an ILS makes it accessible to a wide range of aircraft, from light training types to regional airliners. For the simulator pilot, it offers a straightforward but genuine regional airport experience in a scenic part of southern Denmark.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits on the island of Als, close to the town of Sønderborg, in the Region of Syddanmark. It lies within Danish airspace, with the German border and the town of Flensburg some 55 km to the south. Other nearby towns of note for orientation include Åbenrå, roughly 41 km away, and Tønder, about 70 km distant.

Runways

Sønderborg has a single physical runway, 14/32, of hard surface construction and 5,884 feet in length. The runway is lit for night operations, and runway 32 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-capable pilots a reliable means of arrival in poor weather.

Radio & Navigation

The field is served by an AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) on 126.4 MHz, rather than a full air traffic control unit. An ILS is available on runway 32 for instrument approaches.

History

Although Sønderborg Airport officially opened in 1968, aviation at the site dates back further: the first flights were operated in 1950 by Sønderjyllands Flyveselskab. The airport has since seen a succession of operators on the key route to Copenhagen, including Cimber Sterling, which flew the service until its bankruptcy in May 2012, followed briefly by DAT, and then Alsie Express, founded in April 2013, which has operated the Sønderborg-Copenhagen route since.

The Airfield Today

Sønderborg Airport today handles scheduled flights to Copenhagen and seasonal services to Bornholm, together with charter flights to a range of European leisure destinations, all operated by Alsie Express. The airport lies around 7 km from Sønderborg town, with onward transport by taxi or car.
