Warsaw Modlin Airport, ICAO EPMO, lies at Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki some forty kilometres north of central Warsaw and serves as Poland's dedicated low-cost airline gateway to the capital. For a simulator pilot it offers a long, ILS-equipped runway and a flying history stretching back through military service in the twentieth century to its rebirth as a civil airport in 2012.

Overview

Modlin Airport is an international airport at Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, Masovian Voivodeship, about forty kilometres north of Warsaw. It was purpose-built to handle low-cost and charter traffic serving the Polish capital, and today Ryanair operates it as its only year-round scheduled carrier, with other airlines such as Enter Air adding seasonal services. Its long history as a military airfield followed by conversion to civilian use, together with its single long hard-surfaced runway and Category II ILS, make it a worthwhile and realistic destination for airliner and general aviation flights alike in the simulator.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in Masovian Voivodeship, roughly forty kilometres north of central Warsaw, Poland.

Runways

Modlin has a single physical runway, 08/26, aligned east-west and surfaced in hard construction. It is 8195 feet long, fully lit, and equipped with an ILS on runway 08. The reciprocal runway 26 is of matching length at 8194 feet and is also lit but without an instrument landing system. The field elevation is 338 feet.

Radio & Navigation

The airport's published INFO frequency is 124.5 MHz. The runway 08 approach is supported by an Instrument Landing System; a Category I ILS became operational on 19 September 2013, with testing for a Category II system completing by 1 May 2014, giving the field a precision approach capability befitting its role as a scheduled low-cost carrier hub.

History

The airfield's origins lie in military aviation: after being seized by the 47th Artillery Regiment of the Red Army it served as a temporary base for the Red Army Air Force. After 1945 the Modlin airfield passed to the command of the Polish Air Force, and from 1976 through the 1990s it was home to the 45th Air Experimental Squadron. In the early 2000s the site was earmarked for conversion to civilian use as a replacement for Warsaw's former low-cost terminal, and much of the original military land was contributed as capital to a joint venture company, Port Lotniczy Mazowsze Warszawa-Modlin Sp. z o.o., set up to build and run the new airport. Construction began in October 2010, missing a planned completion before Euro 2012. The airport was officially inaugurated on 15 July 2012, a day ahead of its first scheduled departure, with the first passenger flight arriving from Budapest at around 17:30 on 16 July. Runway defects forced a temporary closure, and the airport did not fully reopen until 4 July 2013 following repair works. Wizz Air chose not to return to Modlin after the reopening, remaining instead at Warsaw Chopin, but Ryanair resumed operations on 30 September 2013. The Category I ILS was declared operational on 19 September 2013, with a Category II system following by 1 May 2014. By October 2015 the airport had welcomed its five-millionth passenger overall.

The Airfield Today

Modlin continues to operate as a scheduled and charter airport serving low-cost traffic into the Warsaw area. Ryanair is its only regular year-round carrier, with airlines such as Enter Air adding seasonal flights. The single runway's Category I and Category II ILS on runway 08 supports instrument approaches in a range of weather conditions, and the runway's substantial length and lighting make it suitable for a wide variety of aircraft types in the simulator.
