Szczecin-Goleniów "Solidarność" Airport (EPSC) is the main international gateway for Szczecin, Poland, lying some 45 km northeast of the city near Goleniów. Szczecin-Goleniów "Solidarność" Airport serves as the principal domestic and international airport for the city of Szczecin, though it lies well outside the city itself, near the town of Goleniów in the village of Glewice. It began life as a Cold War military airfield before being converted to civilian use, and today it handles scheduled and charter services under the operator Szczecin–Goleniów Airport Ltd. For a simulator pilot it is notable chiefly for its long single runway, full ILS approach and airline traffic pattern, offering a change of pace from smaller general aviation fields in the region.
The airport lies in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, about 45 km (28 mi) northeast of Szczecin near the town of Goleniów, in the village of Glewice. As a public international airport handling scheduled airline traffic, it sits within controlled airspace appropriate to its status, with the nearest comparable aerodrome being Szczecin-Dąbie Airport some 28 km to the southwest.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 13/31, some 8,162-8,163 ft (approximately 2,500 m) long with a hard surface, lit for night operations. The 31 direction is equipped with an ILS approach.
The tower callsign is SZCZECIN TWR, operating on 121.255 MHz. The 31 approach is served by an ILS.
The airfield was built between 1953 and 1956 at the height of the Cold War, some 5 km east of Goleniów, as a standard military airport with a 1,800 m by 45 m runway and basic infrastructure including hangars and an air traffic control tower. In 1967 the civilian airport previously based at Dąbie was relocated to this site and named Port Lotniczy Szczecin–Goleniów. Between 1976 and 1977 the runway was extended to its current length of 2,500 m and a new passenger terminal was built. Further improvements followed in the late 1990s: runway and main apron works were carried out in 1998, and the electricity supply together with runway and approach lighting was upgraded in 1999. A new passenger terminal opened in 2001, with expansion works beginning in 2005 and concluding in April 2006, at which point the airport was renamed in honour of the Solidarność trade union. A new air traffic control tower was built between 2004 and 2005. In July 2013 a rail spur was opened linking the airport to the Szczecin–Kołobrzeg line, giving a direct rail connection to the city.
The airport continues to operate as the main airline gateway for Szczecin, with scheduled and charter services connecting to destinations including Warsaw, Liverpool, London-Stansted, Bergen and Oslo, among others. It is equipped with a lit runway and ILS approach, supporting both day and night operations in varying weather.
