Copernicus Wrocław Airport (EPWR) is a large civil-military aerodrome about 10 kilometres southwest of Wrocław in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, southwestern Poland, serving as the principal gateway to one of the country's most historic and fastest-growing cities. Home to a single long instrument runway and a busy mix of airline, general aviation and military traffic, it offers a straightforward but well-controlled destination for visiting VFR and IFR pilots alike. The field has a long aviation pedigree, having been built by the Germans in 1938 and expanded repeatedly since Poland's post-war civil aviation era began.

Overview

Copernicus Wrocław Airport, known by its ICAO code EPWR, serves the city of Wrocław in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. It is a large, internationally connected airport handling scheduled airline traffic alongside general aviation, cargo and military movements, and it carries the name of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who studied and later served as a scholaster in Wrocław in the early sixteenth century. For a simulator pilot it is a useful destination combining a long ILS-equipped runway, an active control tower and approach service, and a mixed civil-military operating environment.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies roughly 10 kilometres from Wrocław city centre and operates as a controlled aerodrome with its own tower and approach service. Approach control is provided by Poznań Approach, and a delivery frequency is available for clearance requests during published hours, placing EPWR firmly within managed airspace for arriving and departing traffic. As a civil-military field it is also used by the Polish Air Force, United States Air Force, NATO air forces and the Heavy Airlift Wing, so pilots should expect a mixed traffic environment.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 11/29, aligned northwest-southeast. It is 8187 feet long with a hard surface and is lit for night operations. Runway 29 is additionally equipped with an ILS, giving instrument approach capability from that direction. Field elevation is 400 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include Poznań Approach on 123.04 MHz and 128.925 MHz, Wrocław Tower on 120.255 MHz (available H24), Wrocław Delivery on 121.805 MHz (available 0530-2100), and Wrocław ATIS on 124.33 MHz (available H24). An ILS serves runway 29, supporting instrument approaches to that runway.

History

The airfield was first built by the Germans in 1938 and, under Polish administration, was long known as Strachowice Airport before being renamed on 6 December 2005 in honour of Nicolaus Copernicus, who had studied in Wrocław and served as a scholaster of the city's Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St Bartholomew between 1503 and 1538. In its early post-war civil form the airport had a single runway and one terminal building handling international and domestic flights in separate sections, along with a substantial cargo terminal. The first international flights began in January 1993, connecting Wrocław with Frankfurt. A new international departure terminal opened in May 1997, followed by a new domestic terminal in November 1998, and services expanded further between 2007 and 2008 as additional airlines began operating from the airport.

The Airfield Today

Copernicus Wrocław Airport today functions as an international civil-military airport, ranked among Poland's busiest, with one runway, passenger and cargo terminals and a general aviation terminal. It hosts a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service base, established in May 2014, and since 2015 has been home to a Ryanair aircraft maintenance base, with hangar facilities expanded in 2017 and again from October 2022 to accommodate further Boeing 737-type aircraft. The field continues to see use by the Polish Air Force, United States Air Force, NATO air forces and the Heavy Airlift Wing alongside its civil airline operations.
