Ronneby Airport (ESDF/RNB) serves the town of Ronneby in Blekinge County, southern Sweden, sharing its single long runway between civil Swedavia operations and the Swedish Air Force's F 17 wing. Its 7,637 ft hard-surfaced, ILS-equipped runway makes it one of the longer strips in southern Sweden, reflecting its dual military and airline role.

Overview

Ronneby Airport lies at Kallinge, close to the town of Ronneby in Blekinge County, southern Sweden. It is a joint civil-military aerodrome, operated for civil traffic by Swedavia while also hosting the Swedish Air Force's Blekinge Wing, F 17. For a visiting sim pilot the field offers a single very long, well-equipped runway with full ILS and lighting, set in a relatively low-traffic corner of southern Sweden, and the mix of scheduled airline movements alongside fast-jet military flying gives it a distinctive character.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Kallinge, about 8 kilometres from Ronneby and roughly 30 kilometres from both Karlshamn and Karlskrona. It is within an hour's drive of several other Blekinge and neighbouring-region towns, including Sölvesborg, Kalmar, Kristianstad and Växjö. As a shared civil-military field with a resident fast-jet wing, pilots should expect associated controlled airspace and military traffic in the vicinity.

Runways

Ronneby has a single physical runway, 01/19, measuring 7,637 ft with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS, making it suitable for instrument approaches in both directions.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services at Ronneby include Ground on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 119.2 MHz, with a further frequency of 128.45 MHz associated with the terminal control area. The runway is served by an ILS.

History

Ronneby Airport (Kallinge) has long combined civil and military functions. It is home to the Swedish Air Force's Blekinge Wing, F 17, which operates an international flying unit and two JAS (Gripen) divisions from the airfield. The base is also home to Sweden's only Air Base Defence Ranger unit, the Flygbasjägarskolan. On the civil side, the airport has for many years handled scheduled domestic passenger services, historically ranking among the busier regional airports in southern Sweden (Götaland).

The Airfield Today

Ronneby Airport continues to operate as a joint civil and military facility. Scandinavian Airlines operates scheduled flights connecting Ronneby to Stockholm-Arlanda. On the days it operates for scheduled service, the airport typically opens around one hour and fifteen minutes before the first departure and closes fifteen minutes after the last arrival. The military side remains active with F 17 Wing's Gripen divisions and the Flygbasjägarskolan based at the field.
