Örnsköldsvik Airport (ESNO) serves the town of Örnsköldsvik from a site at Husum, some 24 km to the northeast, and is best known among aviation enthusiasts for having hosted the world's first remotely operated air traffic control tower. It offers a single long paved runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots flying in the Västernorrland region of Sweden.

Overview

Örnsköldsvik Airport is a regional aerodrome serving the town of Örnsköldsvik on Sweden's northern Baltic coast, though the field itself lies at Husum, some way northeast of the town it is named for. Built in 1961, it has long handled domestic and seasonal charter traffic and is notable for being the first airport in the world to operate with a remotely controlled air traffic tower. For the simulator pilot, its long asphalt runway with ILS guidance and AFIS radio service make it an accessible and interesting stop in the Norrland region.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located near Husum, about 24 km (15 nm) northeast of the town of Örnsköldsvik, in Västernorrland County on Sweden's northern coast. It sits at an elevation of 341 feet.

Runways

Örnsköldsvik has one physical runway, 12/30, a hard-surfaced strip roughly 6,554 to 6,555 feet (about 2,000 metres) long. Both ends are lit, and runway 12 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-capable traffic a precision approach into the field.

Radio & Navigation

The airport is served by an AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) rather than full air traffic control, operating on 122.25 MHz. Runway 12 offers an ILS approach for instrument arrivals.

History

Örnsköldsvik Airport was built in 1961 at Husum, northeast of the town it serves. It has handled scheduled and seasonal charter services over the decades, recording a peak of 165,712 passengers in 2000. On 31 October 2014 the airport became the first in the world to receive approval for a remotely operated air traffic control tower, with control functions transferred to and exercised from Sundsvall-Timrå Airport rather than from a traditional on-site tower.

The Airfield Today

The airport has been operated by the Municipality of Örnsköldsvik since 1 April 2011. It continues to host scheduled domestic flights, including services to Stockholm-Arlanda, along with seasonal charter flights to destinations such as Chania and Rhodes. Air traffic services are provided by AFIS on 122.25 MHz, with the control function itself delivered remotely from Sundsvall-Timrå Airport.
