Kiruna Airport lies far north of the Arctic Circle, making it the northernmost airport in Sweden and a distinctive destination for pilots seeking Arctic scenery and wide-open airspace. Operated by Swedavia, the field sits some 10 kilometres from Kiruna's old town centre and about 4 kilometres from the newer town centre, serving scheduled, seasonal and helicopter traffic into the surrounding mountain region.

Overview

Kiruna Airport (ICAO: ESNQ, IATA: KRN) is the northernmost airport in Sweden, located in Norrbotten County near the town of Kiruna. It is operated by Swedavia and has served the region since 1960, handling scheduled passenger flights as well as helicopter services into the nearby mountains. For a sim pilot, its appeal lies in the combination of a long, well-equipped runway, dramatic sub-Arctic terrain, and unusually generous surrounding airspace.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits far north of the Arctic Circle in Norrbotten County, roughly 10 kilometres from Kiruna's old town centre and about 4 kilometres from the newer town centre. Swedavia notes that the airport's remote northern location provides an unusually large amount of free airspace, which is one reason organisations such as NASA have used the Kiruna area for high-latitude research and test flying (swedavia.com).

Runways

Kiruna has a single physical runway, 03/21, oriented roughly north-south. It is 8,179 feet long with a hard paved surface and is lit for night operations. Runway 21 is equipped with an ILS approach, and the field as a whole has instrument approach capability, at a field elevation of 1,470 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Kiruna Tower operates on 130.15 MHz. The airfield offers instrument approach facilities, including an ILS serving runway 21, appropriate to its role as a scheduled international and domestic airport.

History

Kiruna Airport was inaugurated in 1960 to serve the town's transport needs, which have long been shaped by its remote northern location and dependence on air links for both residents and business. Its extensive, largely unrestricted surrounding airspace has made it attractive to research bodies, including NASA, which has used the Kiruna area for ozone research and cold-climate testing (swedavia.com). The airfield's history includes a serious accident on 15 March 2012, when a Norwegian Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport crashed into the Kebnekaise mountain while approaching Kiruna Airport, killing all five personnel on board (en.wikipedia.org).

The Airfield Today

Kiruna Airport continues to operate as Sweden's northernmost airport under Swedavia, handling scheduled flights from Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle to Stockholm-Arlanda, together with seasonal services from Air France to Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Eurowings to Dusseldorf. Beyond fixed-wing scheduled traffic, the airport supports scheduled helicopter flights into the surrounding mountain region, including services to the Nikkaluokta-Kebnekaise mountain lodge operated by Kallax Flyg (en.wikipedia.org).
