Umeå Airport (ICAO: ESNU, IATA: UME) lies on the southern outskirts of Umeå in Västerbotten County, Sweden, and is operated by Swedavia. It is a well-equipped regional field with a single long runway, full ILS coverage, and instrument-served approaches, making it a straightforward destination for both airline and general aviation traffic flying into northern Sweden.

Overview

Umeå Airport is a public airport on the southern edge of the city of Umeå, operated by Swedavia. It serves as a regional hub for northern Sweden with scheduled and charter services, and its single long, hard-surfaced runway with ILS on both directions makes it a capable and reliable destination for visiting pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits on the southern outskirts of Umeå, in Västerbotten County, Sweden, roughly 5.4 kilometres by road from the city centre.

Runways

Umeå has one physical runway, 14/32, 7,521 ft long on the 14 threshold and 7,327 ft on the 32 threshold, with a hard surface. Both directions are lit and equipped with ILS, giving instrument approach capability from either end.

Radio & Navigation

The tower operates as TWR on 119.8 MHz. Both runway directions are served by ILS, supporting instrument approaches to the field.

History

Umeå Airport was inaugurated in May 1962, although its first flight took place in 1961. The field has seen two notable incidents: on 21 September 1992 an Air Sweden IAI-1124 Westwind (registered SE-DLK) was destroyed by fire after an aborted takeoff due to engine failure, with all seven occupants escaping unharmed, and on 14 July 2019 a GippsAero GA8 Airvan carrying skydivers crashed shortly after departure, killing all nine on board.

The Airfield Today

The airport is operated by Swedavia and handles regular scheduled and charter flights from airlines including Finnair, Jonair, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines and TUI fly Nordic, with routes to destinations such as Stockholm, Vaasa, Östersund and seasonal charter services to Gran Canaria. As of 2019 it ranked as the seventh-largest airport in Sweden by traffic.
