Luleå Airport, known locally as Luleå/Kallax Airport, lies close to the village of Kallax a few kilometres south-southeast of Luleå in Norrbotten County, northern Sweden. It shares its single very long runway with the Swedish Air Force's Norrbotten Wing (F 21), making it an unusual mix of busy regional airline hub and active military base, and a notable destination for simulator pilots interested in far-northern European flying.

Overview

Luleå Airport serves the city of Luleå and the wider Norrbotten region as Sweden's fourth-busiest airport by passenger numbers. It is operated by Swedavia and sits alongside the Norrbotten Wing (F 21) of the Swedish Air Force, with which it shares its runway. For a virtual pilot, the appeal lies in its combination of scheduled and charter airline traffic, a genuinely enormous single runway built to military specifications, and its location well inside the Arctic Circle region, offering distinctive high-latitude scenery and winter operating conditions.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 7 km south-southeast of Luleå city centre, near the village of Kallax, on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia (Bottenviken) in Norrbotten County. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own approach and tower services, reflecting its dual role as a civil airport and military airfield for the Norrbotten Wing (F 21).

Runways

Luleå has a single very long physical runway, 14/32, oriented northwest-southeast. Both directions are listed at just under 10,990 feet (roughly 3,350 metres) in length, with a hard surface, runway lighting, and instrument landing system (ILS) equipment serving both ends. This exceptional length reflects the runway's extension in 1999 to accommodate cargo flights and its continued use by military aircraft.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services at Luleå include an Approach frequency of 125.45 MHz, an Operations frequency of 122.6 MHz, and a Tower frequency of 128.2 MHz operating under the callsign VADER NORTH. The airport is equipped with ILS on both runway directions (14 and 32), supporting instrument approaches in the often demanding winter weather of northern Sweden.

History

Luleå Airport began life as the military airfield of the Norrbotten Wing (F 21), established in 1941, before opening to civilian traffic with a service to Stockholm on 11 September 1944. Winter operations became possible from 1948 once a hangar and runway lighting were in place, and international tourist charter flights began in 1969. The current terminal building dates from 1984. Passenger numbers grew strongly through the 1980s before falling back in the 1990s, a pattern seen across Swedish aviation generally, with traffic first reaching one million passengers in 1991 and again in 2011. In 1999 the runway was extended to 3,350 metres specifically to allow cargo flights, though this expansion did not lead to the hoped-for growth in traffic, which the airport authority has attributed to broader economic conditions.

The Airfield Today

Luleå Airport is operated by Swedavia and remains the largest airport in northern Sweden (Norrland), handling both domestic and international scheduled and charter services alongside cargo operations. Airlines using the field include Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Edelweiss Air, Transavia and Vueling, connecting Luleå to destinations such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and, seasonally, Zurich and Paris. The runway continues to be shared with the Swedish Air Force's Norrbotten Wing (F 21), giving the airfield an active military as well as civilian character.
