Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is Sweden's principal international gateway, lying in the Sigtuna Municipality some 37 kilometres north of central Stockholm. It operates three parallel and crossing hard-surfaced runways equipped with ILS, and serves as the main hub for Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

Overview

Stockholm-Arlanda is Sweden's largest airport and the principal hub for Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, handling international and domestic services from a site in the Sigtuna Municipality north of the capital. For a visiting simulator pilot it offers a busy, multi-runway major airport environment with full ILS coverage on every runway, making it an interesting and demanding destination for airline-style operations.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Sigtuna Municipality, near the town of Märsta, about 37 kilometres north of Stockholm and nearly 40 kilometres south-east of Uppsala, within Stockholm County and the historical province of Uppland. It sits at coordinates 59.6519N, 17.9186E at an elevation of 112 feet, and as Sweden's major international gateway it is surrounded by controlled airspace serving the high volume of scheduled and charter traffic passing through the Stockholm area.

Runways

Arlanda has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced, lit and equipped with ILS. Runway 01L/19R is the longest at 10,771/10,770 feet. Runway 01R/19L measures 8,151 feet in both directions. Runway 08/26 is 8,145/8,144 feet long. The parallel 01/19 pair combined with the crossing 08/26 runway give the airport a flexible three-runway layout for handling traffic in varying wind conditions.

Radio & Navigation

Arlanda traffic is worked by Stockholm Control on approach at 123.75 MHz. The tower frequency is 118.5 MHz, with ground movements on 121.7 MHz. ATIS is broadcast on 119 MHz, and clearance delivery is available on 121.825 MHz. A meteorological office (PMSV) can be reached on 122.6 MHz. All runways are served by ILS, supporting instrument approaches in all weather conditions typical of the region.

History

The airport takes its name from the parish of Husby-Ärlinghundra, popularly known as Arland, after a 1958 naming competition run through Året Runt magazine failed to produce a winning suggestion and the jury's own proposal of Arlanda was adopted; the name Stockholm-Arlanda Airport was subsequently approved by the Riksdag. The first scheduled flight from the field departed on 23 June 1960, a Scandinavian Airlines System Douglas DC-8 bound for New York, at a time when the present-day field garage still served as the terminal building and the airport's first hangar, known as the DC8 hangar, had just been built. Stockholm-Arlanda Airport was officially declared open on 1 April 1962 by King Gustav VI Adolf. (https://www.swedavia.com/arlanda/about-the-airport/)

The Airfield Today

Arlanda remains Sweden's largest airport and serves as the major hub for Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, alongside the smaller Stockholm-Bromma and more distant Skavsta and Västerås airports that also serve the capital region. In 2025 the airport offered 291 non-stop routes, a mix of scheduled and charter services, and carried over 24 million passengers that year. The airport has been recognised for its environmental performance, receiving the ECO-Innovation Airport of the Year award from ACI Europe in 2021, and is noted as a leader in the industry's move toward fossil-free operations.
