Norrköping Airport (ESSP/NRK) lies a few kilometres east of the city of Norrköping in Östergötland County, Sweden, and holds the distinction of being the country's oldest civil airport still in operation, having opened in 1934. Today it serves seasonal charter and scheduled flights alongside general aviation and flight training, with a long hard-surfaced runway equipped with ILS and a shorter grass strip for lighter traffic.
Norrköping Airport, known locally as Norrköping-Kungsängens flygplats, sits close to the city of Norrköping and is Sweden's oldest civil airport still in continuous use, having opened in 1934. It is owned by Norrköping Municipality and today handles a mix of seasonal charter flights, general aviation, and flying-club activity, making it a field of interest to VFR pilots for its long history and its combination of a substantial hard runway with a shorter grass strip.
The airport is situated a few kilometres from the centre of Norrköping, close to the E22 road and the Söderleden connector linking to the E4. It lies within Östergötland County on Sweden's east coast.
Norrköping has two physical runways. The main runway, 09/27, is 7,190 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, equipped with an ILS. A secondary runway, 11/29, is a grass strip of around 2,622 to 2,623 feet, also lit, suitable for lighter general aviation traffic.
Approach is provided by Ostgota Approach on 133.35 MHz, and Tower operates on 120.35 MHz. The main runway, 09/27, is served by an ILS.
Norrköping-Kungsängens flygplats was inaugurated on 9 September 1934 and is Sweden's oldest civil airport still in operation. Regular passenger services began in 1936, with the first aircraft to land there arriving from the Dutch airline KLM; early routes connected Norrköping with Stockholm, Malmö and Copenhagen. Much of the original construction was funded through a state employment relief scheme, reflecting the heavy earthworks required to build the field. In the early 1940s the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration (Luftfartsverket) took over operation of the airport and expansion followed. The airport enjoyed its busiest years in the 1980s, when many passengers travelled on business to Stockholm, before the completion of the motorway network and the introduction of airport security checks in 2001 caused a sharp decline in that traffic. Norrköping Municipality assumed ownership of the airport on 15 May 2006 and subsequently invested in developing air services, leading to a recovery in traffic and the arrival of several new carriers, including Danish airline Cimber Sterling from 2006. Cimber Sterling's collapse in 2012 and the subsequent brief operations and failures of Skyways and NextJet on the Copenhagen route marked a further turbulent period. In February 2019 flybmi, then the only carrier offering regular scheduled services, ceased all operations after entering administration.
The airport today is Sweden's fourth-largest for charter traffic, with seasonal charter and scheduled flights operated by carriers such as TUI fly Nordic and Pegasus Airlines to destinations around the Mediterranean and further afield. Alongside commercial charter operations, the field supports general aviation and flight training, and is home to the locally based operator WaltAir Europe AB. Cargo movements are also handled at the airport, including flights by Icelandair Cargo.
