Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport (FKYS/NSI) is Cameroon's second-busiest airport, serving the capital Yaoundé from a site some 27 kilometres to the south. It offers a single long, hard-surfaced runway with an ILS, making it a straightforward destination for airliners and general aviation traffic operating into the Centre Region.

Overview

Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport lies near the village of Nsimalen in Cameroon's Centre Region and serves as the principal gateway to the national capital, Yaoundé. It is operated by Aéroports du Cameroun SA (ADC) and acts as the focus city for Camair-Co, Cameroon's national carrier. For a simulator pilot it offers a substantial single-runway operation with an ILS approach, set within African equatorial terrain at a notably high field elevation for a lowland capital city airport.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located near Nsimalen, approximately 27 kilometres (16 miles) south of Yaoundé, within Cameroon's Centre Region. It sits at coordinates 3.7225N, 11.5533E. The older Yaoundé Airport, closer to the city centre, now functions as a Cameroon Air Force base rather than a civilian field.

Runways

Nsimalen has one physical runway, 01/19, measuring 11,188 feet in length with a hard surface and runway lighting throughout. An ILS is provided for approaches to runway 19, giving instrument-equipped traffic a precision approach aid at this high-elevation field.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect to work Yaoundé Approach on 121.3 MHz and Yaoundé Tower on 119.1 MHz. An ILS serves runway 19, supporting instrument approaches to the field.

History

Nsimalen airport began operations in 1991, built to replace the original Yaoundé Airport, which had become hemmed in by the city's rapid growth and lay too close to fuel storage facilities operated by the Cameroon Oil Storage Company (SCDP). That older airport continues to exist as an airbase for the Cameroon Air Force. Passenger traffic through Nsimalen grew steadily in the years after opening, reaching 190,487 passengers in 2004 and around 209,000 by 2009, with the government setting ambitions for the airport to handle 1.5 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo annually as traffic continued to grow at around four percent a year.

The Airfield Today

Nsimalen remains Cameroon's second-busiest and largest public airport, operated by Aéroports du Cameroun SA. It serves as the focus city for Camair-Co and hosts a range of regional and intercontinental carriers connecting Yaoundé to destinations across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Prior permission is required for general aviation operations at the field.
