Livingstone Airport (FLHN) serves the city of Livingstone in Zambia's Southern Province, close to the Zambezi River and the world-famous Victoria Falls. Named after the Scottish missionary-explorer David Livingstone, the airfield offers a long hard-surfaced main runway well suited to a variety of traffic, set against one of southern Africa's most striking natural landmarks. For the visual-flight pilot, the field is chiefly notable as the aerial gateway to Victoria Falls and the historic colonial town that grew up as the first capital of Northern Rhodesia.
Livingstone Airport lies at Livingstone, the historic city in Zambia's Southern Province that sits some 10 kilometres north of the Zambezi River and close to the border with Zimbabwe. The city, and by extension the airfield, takes its name from the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, who in 1855 became the first European to see the nearby waterfall he named Victoria Falls. For a sim pilot, the appeal of routing to FLHN lies in this combination of a substantial paved runway and immediate proximity to one of the most dramatic natural features on the continent.
The airfield sits at Livingstone in Zambia's Southern Province, close to the Zambezi River and within easy reach of Victoria Falls and the Zimbabwean border town of the same name on the opposite bank. The city itself was long the administrative and trading gateway between the two sides of the Zambezi, a position it retains as an aviation gateway to the Falls today.
Livingstone has two paved runways. The main runway, 10/28, is a hard-surfaced strip 9,816 feet long and lit. A secondary hard-surfaced runway, 15/33, measures 4,658 feet and is also lit. Field elevation is 3,261 feet.
The Zambezi River and the plume of Victoria Falls, lying close to the field, provide the most prominent visual landmarks for locating and approaching Livingstone from the air, with the city's colonial-era street grid also recognisable on the approach.
Livingstone was founded in 1905 on higher ground away from the malarial Old Drift crossing point on the Zambezi, and was named in honour of David Livingstone, who had been shown the river and the Falls by the Subiya-Kololo Chief Sekeletu in 1855. The British South Africa Company moved the administrative capital of the territory to Livingstone in 1907, and from 1911 it served as the first capital of Northern Rhodesia until the seat of government moved to Lusaka in 1935. The city prospered as a trading gateway between the northern and southern banks of the Zambezi, with the railway reaching the Falls in 1904 and the Victoria Falls Bridge following soon after, cementing Livingstone's role as a hub for regional transport that its airfield continues in the air.
