Ivato International Airport is the principal gateway to Madagascar, lying some 16 kilometres northwest of the capital, Antananarivo, in the commune of Ivato. It is a mixed civil and military aerodrome and the main hub for Madagascar Airlines, offering a single long paved runway with instrument approach capability that makes it accessible in a wide range of weather conditions.

Overview

Ivato International Airport serves Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, and is operated as a civil and military mixed platform by Ravinala Airports. It functions as the principal hub for Madagascar Airlines and is the country's busiest airport, handling roughly a million passengers a year. For a simulator pilot, Ivato offers a long, high-altitude runway with an ILS approach set against the highland terrain surrounding Antananarivo, making it an interesting destination for both airliner and general aviation operations.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 16 kilometres northwest of Antananarivo city centre, in the commune of Ivato. Sitting at a field elevation of 4,157 feet, it is a high-altitude aerodrome by international standards, which affects aircraft performance planning for a simulated approach or departure.

Runways

Ivato has a single physical runway, 11/29, orientated northwest-southeast. It is a hard-surfaced strip measuring 10,158 feet in length, and it is lit for night operations. An ILS is available for runway 11.

Radio & Navigation

The tower frequency is 120.1 MHz. Runway 11 is equipped with an ILS, providing instrument guidance for arrivals from that direction.

History

Ivato has served as the main airport of Antananarivo since the 1960s, operating as a combined civil and military facility and long serving as the principal hub of Air Madagascar. The airport was the scene of Madagascar's deadliest aviation accident on 19 July 1967, when a Douglas DC-4 of Air Madagascar, departing for Antsiranana, touched down 720 metres past the runway, became briefly airborne again, and then crashed just over 500 metres further on, killing 42 of the 77 people aboard, including the country's foreign minister, Albert Sylla. The airport's terminal infrastructure was substantially renewed with the opening of a new terminal in December 2021.

The Airfield Today

Ivato today operates as the main hub for Madagascar Airlines and is served by a range of international carriers including Airlink, Air Mauritius, Corsair International, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Ewa Air, and Kenya Airways, alongside Madagascar Airlines' domestic network. The airport has separate terminals for international and domestic flights.
