Lubango Mukanka Airport lies on the high plateau above the city of Lubango, capital of Huila Province in southwestern Angola. It is a dual-use civil-military field, handling scheduled airline traffic for TAAG Angola Airlines alongside a resident detachment of Angolan Air Force fighters, which makes it an unusual and interesting destination for the simulator pilot exploring southern Africa.
The airport sits above the city of Lubango on Angola's southern highland plateau, within Huila Province. No specific controlled airspace class or FIR boundary detail is available beyond the airport's own location, but its elevation of 5,748 feet places it well above sea level and pilots should plan performance accordingly.
Lubango has a single physical runway, 10/28, orientated east-west. It is 10,475 feet long with a hard surface and is lit, giving ample length for both light aircraft and larger commercial jets.
The field is served by an AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) on 118.9 MHz. A non-directional beacon, the Lubango NDB (ident: SB), is located 2.4 kilometres east-northeast of the Runway 28 threshold and can be used as a navigation reference when approaching from that direction. No ILS is available at the airport.
The airport has long served as the main gateway to Lubango and Huila Province. On 8 November 1983 a TAAG Angola Airlines Boeing 737 crashed shortly after takeoff, with all 130 passengers and crew on board killed. The field has also had a military role, and satellite imagery confirmed by late 2018 showed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft, part of a wider Angolan order from Russia, based on the apron at the civil-military airport.
Lubango Mukanka Airport continues to combine civil and military operations. TAAG Angola Airlines operates scheduled services connecting Lubango with Catumbela, Huambo, Luanda, Ondjiva and Windhoek-Hosea Kutako in Namibia. The airport also hosts a detachment of Angolan Air Force Sukhoi Su-30 fighters on its apron.
