It is operated by the Angolan government and functions as a domestic airport, with TAAG Angola Airlines providing scheduled service to Luanda's Neto airport. The airfield's substantial single runway and isolated setting on Angola's high central plateau make it a notable waypoint for pilots flying long cross-country routes through the region.
The airport lies at Luena in Moxico Province, in the eastern interior of Angola, at coordinates 11.7686 S, 19.8972 E. It sits at a high field elevation, reflecting the elevated plateau terrain typical of this part of Angola.
Luena has a single physical runway, 11/29, measuring 10,980 feet (roughly 3,350 metres) with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS approach at the field.
An AFIS (aerodrome flight information service) operates on 118.1 MHz. The airport is also equipped with the Luena VOR-DME, identifier VUE, and the Luena non-directional beacon, identifier UE, both located on the field, providing basic radio navigation aids for pilots approaching the area.
Luena Airport has long served as the principal air link for Moxico Province, one of Angola's largest and most remote provinces. The airport underwent redevelopment that saw a small, modern terminal building constructed to replace the older terminal, with the control tower relocated to a position beside the new terminal rather than atop the old one as previously.
Today the airport handles domestic scheduled services, notably TAAG Angola Airlines flights to Luanda's Neto airport. Facilities include the modern terminal building, a control tower situated beside it, and hangars and other airport buildings grouped near the main terminal.
