São Tomé International Airport is the principal aerodrome of São Tomé and Príncipe, situated on the northeastern coast of São Tomé Island close to the capital city. It offers a single long asphalt runway suited to airline and general aviation traffic, and has a notable history as a hub for humanitarian airlift operations during the Nigerian Civil War.

Overview

São Tomé International Airport serves as the main gateway to the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, handling both international and regional flights. For a visiting simulator pilot it presents a straightforward single-runway field on a small tropical island, with a long sealed strip capable of accommodating a wide range of aircraft types, from light singles to medium jets.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on São Tomé Island, in the northeastern part of the island near the coast, roughly 5 kilometres from the city of São Tomé (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Tom%C3%A9_International_Airport). It is the only major international airport in the country, with the sea close to the runway on its northeastern side.

Runways

The field has one physical runway, 11/29, with a hard surface and runway lighting on both directions. The 11 threshold offers 7,084 ft of usable length and the 29 threshold 7,081 ft, giving a strip capable of handling turboprop and jet airliners as well as general aviation traffic. There is no ILS approach available.

Radio & Navigation

Tower is on 118.9 MHz.

History

During the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70), São Tomé served as the major base for the Biafran airlift, an international humanitarian relief effort that flew food and medicine into eastern Nigeria and is credited with saving more than a million lives; this remains the field's most significant historical role (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Tom%C3%A9_International_Airport). The airfield's origins as a military base are reflected in its history as a base established in 1961 and later closed as a military facility in 1975, before its continued development as the country's civil international airport.

The Airfield Today

São Tomé International Airport continues to function as the principal gateway for São Tomé and Príncipe, handling scheduled airline services to destinations in Africa and Europe alongside general aviation movements. It remains a single-runway international airport of a modest scale relative to major hubs, but it is fully equipped to support the country's air links.
