Ndjili International Airport, also known as Kinshasa-Ndjili, is the principal gateway to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sited at Kinshasa and operated as the country's main international airport. It offers a single very long paved runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward and prominent VFR and IFR destination for simulator pilots operating in Central Africa.

Overview

Ndjili International Airport, known by the ICAO code FZAA and IATA code FIH, serves the city of Kinshasa and is the largest and busiest airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It handles both a substantial international airline presence and significant cargo traffic, and for a simulator pilot it represents a major hub airfield with a single, exceptionally long hard-surfaced runway equipped for instrument approaches.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Kinshasa in Kinshasa Province, in the western part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at coordinates 4.3856 S, 15.4447 E. As the country's principal international aerodrome it sits within controlled airspace supported by an approach and tower service, reflecting its status as the main point of entry and exit for the DRC.

Runways

Ndjili has a single physical runway, 06/24, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. The runway is exceptionally long, with the 24 threshold listing a length of 11,051 feet and the 06 threshold 10,798 feet; an ILS is available on runway 24. Field elevation is 997 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Aeronautical frequencies published for the airport are Tower on 118.1 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz, Approach on 119.7 MHz, and an air-to-ground frequency on 128.1 MHz. An ILS is provided for runway 24, supporting instrument approaches to the field.

History

The airfield's history dates back to 1953, when the opening of the runway and the first technical buildings allowed the Belgian national carrier Sabena to become one of the leading operators of air transport in Africa. Following Congolese independence, the first national airlines, Air Congo and Air Zaire, were among the operators of what was for a long period one of the longest runways in the world, at 4,700 metres. In more recent years the airport has been substantially modernised, with a new 35-metre control tower of contemporary design, new technical premises, and a fire station built to international standards. A new passenger terminal, praised internationally for its quality, opened to the public on 25 June 2015.

The Airfield Today

Today Ndjili is regarded as one of the more modern and welcoming airports on the African continent, hosting close to fifteen international airlines in addition to all Congolese carriers serving destinations across the DRC, and functioning as an important stopover for cargo operators. It offers over fifty international and domestic direct destinations from its terminal facilities.
