On 8 July 2011, Hewa Bora Airways Flight 952, a Boeing 727, crashed on landing at the airport, with 74 of the 118 people on board losing their lives. In early 2026 the airport became the target of drone attacks attributed to the Congo River Alliance and M23 forces: eight drones were intercepted over the weekend of 31 January to 1 February 2026, and a further four drones were intercepted in a second attack on 1 March 2026.
The airport continues to handle scheduled air services to and from Kisangani, with airlines including Air Congo and Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation operating routes to destinations such as Kindu, Kinshasa-N'djili, and Goma. Following the 2026 drone attacks, the security situation in and around the airport has been described as unpredictable, and pilots and operators should exercise particular caution when planning flights to or from the field.
