César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport (GCRR/ACE) is the sole gateway to the Canary Island of Lanzarote, sited a few kilometres southwest of the capital, Arrecife. A single long paved runway with an ILS and full ATC service makes it straightforward for both airline traffic and visiting simulator pilots to fly into, against a backdrop of the island's distinctive volcanic terrain.

Overview

César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport serves the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and is operated by AENA. It is named after the Lanzarote-born artist and architect César Manrique, whose influence on the island's aesthetic is considerable and who created a mural for the terminal. For a sim pilot, the appeal lies in a single well-equipped runway set against Lanzarote's stark volcanic landscape, with an ILS approach and full air traffic control.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in San Bartolomé, Las Palmas province, about 5 kilometres southwest of Arrecife, the island's capital. Approach control is provided under the callsign Canarias, reflecting the airport's position within the wider Canary Islands approach and control structure.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 03/21, 7,842 feet long with a hard surface and lit for night operations. Runway 03 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services comprise Canarias APP on 129.3 MHz, an ATIS broadcast on 118.625 MHz, Ground on 121.8 MHz and Tower on 120.7 MHz. Runway 03 offers an ILS approach.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a controlled aerodrome with tower and ground frequencies, all arriving and departing traffic operates under air traffic control clearance; no informal circuit-joining procedures apply.

History

The airport opened on 24 July 1941. A new passenger terminal and control centre were built, and international and domestic flights began using the field from 3 March 1970. The Guacimeta terminal features a mural by César Manrique entitled Lanzarote, and in 2019, to mark the centenary of the artist's birth, the airport's official name was changed to César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport.

The Airfield Today

The airport remains the island's only airport, handling scheduled domestic, international and inter-island flights under AENA. It is equipped with an ILS-served runway and full tower and ground control, making it suitable for airline and general aviation arrivals in most weather conditions.
