Al Massira Airport is Agadir's international gateway, serving Morocco's Souss-Massa region from a site in the commune of Temsia, some 20 kilometres southeast of the city. It offers simulator pilots a single long, ILS-equipped hard runway and a mix of scheduled and seasonal charter traffic from across Europe, making it a realistic destination for airliner and general aviation flights alike.

Overview

Al Massira Airport is the principal airport for Agadir, a major city and tourist centre in southwest Morocco, and is operated by ONDA (Airports of Morocco). It sits in the commune of Temsia, about 20 kilometres southeast of Agadir proper, and handles a substantial volume of international leisure traffic from the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe as well as domestic and regional Moroccan services. For a simulator pilot, its long ILS-served runway and busy mix of low-cost, charter and legacy carriers make it a satisfying airliner destination, while its remoteness from the coast and desert-adjacent terrain give approaches a distinct North African character.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the commune of Temsia, roughly 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Agadir, within Moroccan controlled airspace served by Agadir approach and tower control. Traffic in the vicinity is worked by Agadir APP on 120.9 MHz and handed to Agadir TWR on 119.5 MHz for the runway environment.

Runways

Al Massira has a single physical runway, 09/27, aligned east-west and measuring 10,451 feet on a hard surface. Both thresholds are lit, and runway 27 is equipped with an ILS approach, making it the preferred instrument runway for arriving traffic.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided by Agadir APP on 120.9 MHz and Agadir TWR on 119.5 MHz. The airport holds an ILS Class II certification for runway 27 and is additionally served by a VOR, DME and two NDBs, giving pilots several options for instrument approaches and en-route navigation to the field.

History

The airport has grown steadily as tourism to Agadir and the wider Souss-Massa region has expanded, with passenger numbers rising from just over 1.3 million in 2016 to more than 2.3 million in 2023 and an estimated 3.1 million in 2024, aided by new routes launched from the United Kingdom and Ireland. The field is equipped to an ILS Class II standard, reflecting its role as a significant international point of entry. The airport's history includes a serious accident on 21 August 1994, when Royal Air Maroc Flight 630 crashed approximately ten minutes after taking off from Agadir, killing all 44 people on board; the crash is believed to have resulted from a deliberate act by the pilot in command.

The Airfield Today

Al Massira remains a busy international airport, handling scheduled and seasonal charter services from a wide range of European carriers alongside Royal Air Maroc and regional Moroccan operators, with aircraft up to Boeing 747 size able to use the field. Its single runway is supported by a full ILS Class II approach with VOR, DME and NDB backup, and apron parking is sized to accommodate ten Boeing 737-class aircraft and three Boeing 747s simultaneously, underlining its role as a major civil gateway rather than a general aviation field.
