Blaise Diagne International Airport (GOBD/DSS) is Senegal's principal gateway, situated at Diass in the Thies Region some 43 km east of Dakar. It replaced the constrained Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport in the capital and now serves as the country's main hub for scheduled and cargo traffic, offering a single long, ILS-equipped runway well suited to both airline and general aviation operations.

Overview

Blaise Diagne International Airport lies near the town of Diass in the Thies Region, about 43 km east of downtown Dakar. Operated under a concession by Summa-Limak on behalf of the Senegalese state, it opened in December 2017 as the country's principal international airport, taking over from the older, capacity-constrained Dakar-Yoff field. It now serves as the hub for Air Senegal and Transair, and for the simulator pilot it offers a single very long hard-surfaced runway, full instrument approach capability, and a busy mix of African, European and Middle Eastern airline traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the Thies Region of Senegal, inland from the coast and around 43 km (27 miles) east of Dakar city centre, near the town of Diass. As the country's main international aerodrome it is a controlled field with an operating tower and area/approach radio services; pilots should expect to work with the relevant control positions when transiting or operating in the vicinity.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, 11,531 ft (roughly 3,500 m) long with a hard surface, lit for night operations, and served by an ILS on runway 01.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include an approach/arrival frequency of 120.5 MHz, a tower frequency of 118.8 MHz, and airport ATIS broadcasts on 126.2 MHz (English) and 126.6 MHz (French). Runway 01 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

Plans for a new Dakar airport were long in development, with expected opening dates slipping repeatedly from 2011 through to 2016 amid rising costs, which eventually reached 566 million euros, more than 400 million of which came from the Saudi Binladin Group. The airport finally opened for scheduled operations on 7 December 2017, taking over international and domestic services from the older Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport in Dakar, which had become too small to handle demand. The field is named after Blaise Diagne, the first black African elected to France's parliament, in 1914.

The Airfield Today

Blaise Diagne International Airport now functions as the hub for Air Senegal and Transair, with scheduled passenger services to numerous destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Macaronesia and North America, alongside cargo operations. It is a large, actively developing international airport with modern terminal and apron facilities to support both airline and general aviation traffic.
