The airport sits at very low elevation immediately adjacent to the city of Nouadhibou, on a peninsula on Mauritania's Atlantic coastline in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region.
The airport has a single physical runway, 02/20, aligned roughly north-south. It measures 7974 feet in length with a hard surface and is lit. Runway 02 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.
Traffic at Nouadhibou is worked on an air-to-ground frequency of 886.1 MHz. A tower radio frequency of 120.8 MHz is also published for the field. Runway 02 carries an ILS for instrument approach guidance.
The airfield served the city under its former name of Port-Étienne and has a long-recorded aviation history. On 2 July 1942 an Air France Lockheed 18-07-01 Lodestar crashed shortly after takeoff, with all three occupants surviving though the aircraft was written off. On 7 August 1980 a Tarom Tupolev Tu-154B-1 arriving from Bucharest struck water short of the runway during a low-visibility approach, killing one of the 168 occupants before the aircraft was destroyed. On 10 April 2001 an Air West Antonov An-12BK suffered an engine fire after departure and made a forced landing on the beach a few kilometres from the runway; all six occupants survived, though the aircraft later burnt out.
Nouadhibou International Airport continues to operate as an international airport for the city, with Mauritania Airlines providing scheduled flights to Gran Canaria, Nouakchott and Zouérat.
