São Pedro Airport, officially Cesária Évora International Airport (ICAO GVSV, IATA VXE), serves the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde, lying close to the second city of Mindelo. Named in 2012 after the celebrated Cape Verdean singer, it is the principal gateway for São Vicente and neighbouring Santo Antão, handling both domestic and international traffic. For the visiting VFR or IFR pilot it offers a long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS, set in a valley just outside Mindelo.
São Pedro Airport, known internationally as Cesária Évora International Airport, is the airport serving São Vicente island in Cape Verde. It takes its working name from the nearby village of São Pedro and lies a short distance from Mindelo, the country's second-largest city. The field is operated as part of the VINCI Airports network, which holds a 70 percent stake alongside a 30 percent holding by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, under a concession running to 2063. It is Cape Verde's third most-used airport, and for a simulator pilot it offers an interesting Atlantic island approach into a valley setting close to the coast.
The airport sits in the Ribeira de São Pedro valley, just north of the village of São Pedro, around 5 km southwest of central Mindelo on the island of São Vicente in the Barlavento group of Cape Verde. Traffic in the area is worked by São Vicente Approach and São Vicente Tower.
The field has a single physical runway aligned 06/24, both directions hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 06 is 6,063 ft long and equipped with an ILS; runway 24 is 6,547 ft long. Field elevation is 62 ft.
Radio services are provided by SAO VICENTE APP and SAO VICENTE TWR, both on 118.4 MHz. An ILS serves runway 06 for instrument approaches.
São Pedro Airport was inaugurated in 1960 to serve São Vicente island, taking its name from the neighbouring village. From 2005 work began to upgrade the field into a fully international airport, including plans for a substantial new terminal of around 11,000 square metres capable of processing about 500 passengers an hour. In 2012 the airport was renamed Cesária Évora International Airport in honour of the Cape Verdean singer.
The airport continues to link São Vicente to Cape Verde's main domestic and international destinations and also serves the neighbouring island of Santo Antão. It is operated under a concession by VINCI Airports, which holds 70 percent, with ANA Aeroportos de Portugal holding the remaining 30 percent, an arrangement due to run until 2063. In 2025 the airport handled around 354,000 passengers, making it Cape Verde's third most-used airport.
