Gondar Airport (HAGN/GDQ), also known as Atse Tewodros Airport, is a public airfield serving the historic city of Gondar in Ethiopia's Amhara Region, sitting at high elevation on the plateau south of the town. It offers a single long paved runway well suited to the thin high-altitude air, and operates as a scheduled domestic gateway linking Gondar to Addis Ababa and other northern Ethiopian destinations.

Overview

Gondar Airport, officially Atse Tewodros Airport, is a public aerodrome operated by the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise, serving the city of Gondar in the northern Amhara Region of Ethiopia. It is named after the nineteenth-century Emperor of Ethiopia, Atse Tewodros II. For a visiting simulator pilot the field is notable for its very high elevation and long single runway, making it a useful case study in high-altitude operations, as well as for its role as a domestic gateway to one of Ethiopia's most historic cities.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Azezo, roughly 18 kilometres south of the city of Gondar itself, in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. It sits at a field elevation of 6,440 feet above mean sea level, giving it the high-altitude performance considerations typical of Ethiopian highland airfields.

Runways

Gondar Airport has a single physical runway, 17/35, measuring 9,343 feet in length with a hard surface, and it is lit for night operations.

Radio & Navigation

Ground movements at the airport are handled on a GND frequency of 121.9 MHz. The airport has no instrument landing system.

History

The airport takes its name from the nineteenth-century Emperor of Ethiopia, Atse Tewodros II. It lies about 18 kilometres south of the city of Gondar, which it serves.

The Airfield Today

Gondar Airport continues to operate as a public airport handling scheduled airline services, with Ethiopian Airlines linking Gondar to Addis Ababa and other domestic points such as Axum and Lalibela.
