Gode Airport (HAGO/GDE) serves the town of Gode in Ethiopia's Somali Region, offering a single long paved runway well suited to both civil airline operations and general aviation traffic. Built in the 1960s as a military airbase before being opened to civil flights, it remains a modest but useful airfield for VFR pilots operating in this remote part of eastern Ethiopia.

Overview

Gode Airport, officially named Ugaas Mirad Ugaas Leyli Airport after a former local leader, is a public airfield serving the town of Gode in Ethiopia's Somali Region. It began life as a military air base before being opened up to civil traffic, and today it continues to handle scheduled domestic services alongside any general aviation movements, making it a point of interest for simulator pilots exploring this remote eastern corner of Ethiopia.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies at Gode in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia, at coordinates 5.9351 N, 43.5786 E. No specific airspace classification, FIR boundary detail or nearby controlled airspace is given in the available sources, so pilots should treat this as an isolated airfield in largely uncontrolled airspace typical of the region.

Runways

Gode has a single physical runway, 04/22, aligned roughly north-east/south-west. It is 7,533 feet long, has a hard (asphalt) surface, and is lit.

Radio & Navigation

An RDO ground frequency of 125.2 MHz is published for the field. No ILS or other instrument approach aids are available, and no additional navaid information is given in the available sources.

History

Construction of Gode Airport began in 1965, carried out by the Swedish construction firm Skanska, and the field was formally inaugurated by Emperor Haile Selassie on 10 June 1966. It was originally built as a military air base and was only later opened up for civil flights. The airport's full name, Ugaas Mirad Ugaas Leyli Airport, honours a former mayor of the town, Ughaz Mirad.

The Airfield Today

Gode Airport continues to handle scheduled civil air services, with Ethiopian Airlines operating flights connecting Gode to Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and Jijiga. No information is available on fuel availability, operating hours, resident flying clubs, or PPR requirements.
