Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is Burundi's sole international gateway, sited on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Bujumbura Mairie Province. It offers a single long, lit runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward if remote destination for VFR and IFR flights into East Africa.

Overview

Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport serves Bujumbura, the former capital and largest city of Burundi. It is the country's only international airport and, notably, its only airfield with a paved runway, which makes it the principal point of entry for all air traffic into Burundi and a point of interest for sim pilots exploring the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Bujumbura Mairie Province, in the west of Burundi close to Lake Tanganyika. It is the country's only international airport and the only Burundian airfield with a hard-surfaced runway, giving it a central role in the national airspace structure.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 17/35, with a hard surface and lighting on both directions. Runway 17 is 11,915 feet long and equipped with an ILS approach; the reciprocal, runway 35, is 11,908 feet long. Field elevation is 2,569 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Approach can be contacted on 119.7 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz, and Tower on 118.1 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 17, supporting instrument approaches into the field.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits adjacent to Lake Tanganyika, which forms a prominent and unmistakable landmark for pilots approaching from the west or south when locating the field.

History

The airport is named after Melchior Ndadaye, and serves Bujumbura, which was formerly the capital of Burundi. It remains the country's only international airport and its only airfield with a paved runway, underlining its historical and continuing importance to Burundian aviation.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to operate as Burundi's only international airport, handling all scheduled airline traffic into the country. Scenery packages for the airfield have been produced for flight simulation platforms, including a dedicated release for X-Plane.
