Capital International Airport lies in New Cairo, in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, and serves as the principal gateway for the country's newly built seat of government some 45 kilometres east of central Cairo. Capital International Airport (ICAO: HECP, IATA: CCE) is the primary international airport serving the New Administrative Capital of Egypt, a purpose-built government city east of Cairo. It was constructed at the same time as Sphinx International Airport on the opposite side of the capital and is operated by the Egyptian Airports Company, with ownership resting with the Egyptian Armed Forces. Its scale, three very long runways, and lack of ILS make it an interesting field to fly into on the simulator, whether operating heavy commercial types or general aviation aircraft using its generous runway lengths.
The airport sits in New Cairo, within Cairo Governorate, roughly 45 kilometres east of central Cairo. It was developed as part of the New Administrative Capital project and lies within the same broad Cairo terminal area as Cairo International Airport and Sphinx International Airport, though no specific airspace classification or ATZ details are given in the available material.
Capital International Airport has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. The longest pair, 01L/19R, measures 11,908 feet and 11,933 feet respectively. A second pair, 01R/19L, runs to 10,463 feet and 10,485 feet. A third runway, 02/20, offers 10,855 feet and 10,875 feet. There is no ILS at the field, and field elevation is 830 feet above mean sea level.
Air traffic services are provided under the callsigns Capital Tower on 118.9 MHz and Capital Ground on 121.925 MHz, with Capital Radio also available on 5.79 MHz. No published navaids or instrument approach procedures are noted for the field, and there is no ILS on any of the runways.
Capital International Airport was inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and opened by the Egyptian Airports Company on 9 July 2019 for a one-month trial period handling around 300 passengers an hour, with full commercial operations following in 2020. The main contractor for its construction was Hassan Allam Holding. Built to serve the New Administrative Capital, the airport was developed in tandem with Sphinx International Airport to the west of Cairo, and was intended to help relieve pressure on both Cairo International Airport and Sphinx International Airport as the new capital grew.
The airport is operated by the Egyptian Airports Company and owned by the Egyptian Armed Forces. Its terminal building has a current throughput capacity of around 300 passengers per hour, with land facilities designed for up to one million passengers a year, expandable as demand grows, and the field is intended to serve not only scheduled and charter passenger flights but also petroleum-industry operators, private jets and air taxi traffic. Scheduled and charter services recorded include Air Cairo flights to Jeddah and seasonal Smartwings charters to Bratislava and Prague.
