Hurghada International Airport (HEGN/HRG) is Egypt's second-busiest airport, serving the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada from a site just inland of the coast. It offers two long, hard-surfaced parallel runways with ILS approaches, making it a straightforward destination for simulated airliner and charter operations into a major holiday gateway.

Overview

Hurghada International Airport lies inland from the Red Sea coast and is the principal air gateway to Egypt's Hurghada resort area. It ranks as the second busiest airport in Egypt after Cairo, handling a substantial mix of scheduled and seasonal charter traffic from Europe and the Middle East. For a simulator pilot, the field is notable for its pair of very long parallel hard runways and ILS-equipped approaches, reflecting its role as a high-capacity holiday airport rather than a small regional strip.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits 5 kilometres (3 miles) southwest of Hurghada's city centre, in the El Dahar district, on the Red Sea coast of Egypt. At the published coordinates of 27.1786N, 33.8008E and an elevation of 66 feet, it lies within controlled airspace served by its own approach, tower and ground control positions.

Runways

Hurghada has two physical parallel hard-surfaced runways. The northeast/southwest pair, runway 16L/34R, is 12,350 to 13,153 feet long, lit, and equipped with an ILS. The parallel pair, runway 16R/34L, is slightly longer at 13,531 to 13,547 feet, with an ILS available on the 34L approach. Both runways are of ample length for the full range of airliner traffic using the field.

Radio & Navigation

Hurghada is served by an approach control on 123.4 MHz, a radar-equipped ground service on 121.9 MHz, a tower frequency of 119.6 MHz and a further radio position on 585.9 MHz. The field is ILS-equipped, with instrument approaches available to the 34L and 34R runway ends.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a controlled international aerodrome with dedicated approach, tower and ground positions, arriving and departing traffic at Hurghada is managed under air traffic control rather than informal circuit procedures. No specific published circuit heights or joining instructions are available.

History

Hurghada International Airport underwent a major expansion completed in December 2014, when a new terminal covering 92,000 square metres across three levels was inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, roughly doubling the airport's capacity to accommodate rising numbers of European holiday travellers. The airport has since grown into the second busiest in Egypt, reflecting the sustained development of Hurghada as a Red Sea tourist destination.

The Airfield Today

Hurghada continues to operate as a major holiday and charter hub, ranked as Egypt's second busiest airport, with scheduled and seasonal charter services connecting the city to destinations across Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
