Marsa Matruh International Airport (HEMM/MUH) is a joint civil-military aerodrome on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, serving the resort town of Marsa Matruh in Matruh Governorate. It offers two long, lit hard-surface runways and hosts an Egyptian Air Force fighter brigade alongside seasonal European charter services, making it a notable stop for sim pilots exploring North African coastal flying.

Overview

Marsa Matruh International Airport, known by the ICAO code HEMM and IATA code MUH, lies on Egypt's northern Mediterranean coast at Marsa Matruh in Matruh Governorate. Formerly known simply as Mersa Matruh Airport, it is a government-operated field that combines civilian passenger operations with a significant Egyptian Air Force presence, also being referred to as Mersa Matruh Air Base. For the simulator pilot, the field is notable for its two very long crossing runways and its role as a seasonal gateway for European holiday charters into a desert-coast environment.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at coordinates 31.3253 N, 27.2217 E at an elevation of 85 feet, on the Mediterranean coastline near the town of Marsa Matruh in Matruh Governorate, Egypt. It is classed as a large international airport with customs facilities, reflecting its dual civil and military role.

Runways

The airfield has two physical runways, both hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 06/24 is 9,494 feet long, and runway 15/33 is 9,843 feet long. There is no ILS approach available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services are provided under the callsign Matruh Radio on 579 MHz and Matruh Tower on 118.1 MHz.

History

The airfield was previously known as Mersa Matruh Airport before being redesignated Marsa Matruh International Airport. It also functions as Mersa Matruh Air Base, home to the Egyptian Air Force's 102nd Tactical Fighter Brigade. This brigade includes 26 Squadron, which flies the F-7 and FT-7 fighter aircraft, and a detachment of 82 Squadron operating the Mirage 2000BM and 2000EM.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to serve Marsa Matruh as an international gateway, handling seasonal scheduled and charter flights alongside its ongoing military operations. Airlines operating seasonal charters have included Air Serbia to Belgrade, Neos to Milan-Malpensa, Rome-Fiumicino and Verona, and Smartwings to Bratislava, Brno, Katowice, Ostrava and Prague. The continued presence of the 102nd Tactical Fighter Brigade means the field remains an active mixed-use military and civil aerodrome.
