Eldoret International Airport is a large civilian airport operated by the Kenya Airports Authority, serving the city of Eldoret and the wider Uasin Gishu region of western Kenya. It handles both domestic and international traffic, with a particular emphasis on agricultural cargo exports, and is one of Kenya's designated ports of entry. For a visiting pilot the field is notable for its considerable elevation and correspondingly long runway, both a legacy of its role as a regional cargo hub.
The airport sits in Uasin Gishu County in midwestern Kenya, close to the international border with Uganda, around 17 kilometres by road south of Eldoret's central business district in Kapseret Ward. It lies roughly 269 kilometres by air northwest of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya's principal civilian and military airport.
Eldoret has a single physical runway, 08/26, oriented east-west and surfaced in hard asphalt. Runway 08 measures 11,425 feet and is lit, with an ILS approach available; the reciprocal, Runway 26, measures 10,955 feet and is also lit. The field's considerable length reflects its role handling wide-body cargo freighters.
Radio contacts at Eldoret comprise Approach on 119.4 MHz, Radar on 121.1 MHz, and Tower on 118.4 MHz. An ILS is available for Runway 08.
Eldoret International Airport was established in 1995 and is administered by the Kenya Airports Authority. It was built with the aim of accelerating economic growth by integrating and opening up western Kenya to local and international markets, and was also intended to help exploit the region's largely untapped tourism potential. The airport has developed a role as a regional cargo hub, particularly for agricultural exports, alongside scheduled and ad hoc international freighter services.
The airport is open for international operations daily, with immigration and customs facilities in place, and hours can be extended on request. It supports scheduled domestic passenger services, including flights to Mombasa, Nairobi and Lodwar, as well as regular scheduled and ad hoc international cargo flights linking Eldoret with destinations such as Nairobi and Sharjah. Two cargo handling facilities at the airport provide substantial freight and cold-storage capacity, underlining its continuing importance for agricultural export traffic from western Kenya.
