Sabha Airport lies in the Sabha District of southern Libya, some four kilometres southeast of the city of Sabha, and shares its main runway with the adjoining Sabha Airbase. It is a long-runway desert field with ILS approach capability on its principal runway, serving both civil and military traffic.
Sabha Airport, also rendered Sebha International Airport, serves the city of Sabha, the capital of Libya's Sabha District. It is operated by the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Bureau and is classified as a public/military aerodrome, reflecting the fact that it shares its principal runway with Sabha Airbase, whose facilities lie on the southwest side of the field. For a simulator pilot, the combination of a very long hard runway, ILS guidance and the airport's isolated position deep in the Libyan desert make it a distinctive stop on any trans-Saharan or North African route.
The airport sits in the Sabha District of southern Libya, about four kilometres southeast of Sabha city itself. No specific controlled airspace classification, FIR boundary detail or neighbouring aerodromes are given in the available material beyond the airport's shared use with the adjacent Sabha Airbase.
The field has three physical runways. The main runway, 13/31, is 11,781 ft long with a hard surface and lighting, and carries an ILS on the 13 approach. A second, parallel hard runway, 13L/31R, is 11,207 ft long and also lit. A shorter cross runway, 06/24, is lit and hard-surfaced, with the 06 threshold giving 5,592 ft of usable length and the 24 threshold 4,409 ft. Field elevation is 1,414 ft, at coordinates 26.987, 14.4726.
Approach and Tower services are provided on 119.1 MHz, with Ground on 121.9 MHz. The 13 runway is equipped with an ILS.
Sabha Airport underwent expansion during the 1970s as part of a plan to upgrade it to full international status. In May 2008 a contract worth LD600 million was signed with a joint venture involving Lebanon's CCC and a Libyan development company to build a new passenger terminal, styled on the new terminals built at Tripoli International and Benina International, but this project was never completed owing to the outbreak of the Libyan Civil War. The airport was closed to commercial traffic in 2014 as the civil war continued, and it did not reopen for scheduled services again until March 2017.
Since reopening to commercial traffic in 2017, Sabha Airport has hosted scheduled services from Afriqiyah Airways to Benghazi, and from Fly Oya, Libyan Wings and MedSky Airways to Tripoli-Mitiga. It continues to share its runway complex with the military flying operations of Sabha Airbase on the southwest side of the field.
