Merowe Airport (HSMN/MWE) is a substantial civil and military-capable aerodrome serving the town of Merowe in Sudan's Northern State, built with a single very long paved runway suited to large jet traffic. It has seen recent turbulent history, having been fought over and damaged during the Sudanese civil war, which any pilot planning a visit in a simulator should bear in mind as background to the field's current state.
Merowe Airport lies just outside the town of Merowe in Northern State, Sudan, and was built as a replacement for the older, smaller Merowe Town airport some three kilometres to the west. The current Merowe Airport was completed in 2006, replacing the smaller Merowe Town airport located about three kilometres to the west. It has hosted Sudanese Air Force jet fighters at times, though no unit has been permanently stationed there. The airport became a significant flashpoint in the Sudanese civil war: on 15 April 2023, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia captured the airport along with more than 200 Egyptian soldiers who had been present for joint military exercises with Sudanese forces, together with an Egyptian Air Force aircraft. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) recaptured part of the base on 16 April, but fighting continued, with the RSF regaining full control on 17 April before SAF airstrikes and further ground fighting saw the RSF withdraw; the SAF secured the airport by 19 April and full control of Merowe town by 21 April 2023. The battle left the airport significantly damaged. The conflict continued to affect the field afterward: on 27 April 2024 the SAF reported shooting down three drones targeting the airport, and on 29 November 2024 it claimed to have destroyed sixteen suicide drones aimed at the site. A further RSF drone strike on the nearby Merowe Power Station on 28 February 2025 caused a power outage in the city.
Scheduled civil service to Merowe has been limited, with Nova Airways' route to Khartoum reported as suspended. Given the airport's recent history of battle damage and repeated drone attacks during the Sudanese civil war, its current operational status should be treated with caution by any pilot planning a visit, and prior permission should be assumed necessary.
