Julius Nyerere International Airport (HTDA/DAR) is Tanzania's principal gateway, serving Dar es Salaam on the country's Indian Ocean coast and acting as the main hub for Air Tanzania and Precision Air. For a visiting pilot it offers a long ILS-equipped main runway alongside a shorter crosswind strip, set within a busy international terminal environment named after the nation's first president.

Overview

Julius Nyerere International Airport is the international airport serving Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, and is operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority. It is named after Julius Nyerere (1922-1999), the country's first president, and functions as a hub for Air Tanzania and Precision Air, handling scheduled international, regional and domestic traffic as well as private and charter movements. For a visiting sim pilot it is a substantial commercial field with a long precision-approach runway and a shorter secondary strip, making it a realistic destination for both airliner and general aviation operations.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the Kipawa ward of Ilala District, within Dar es Salaam Region on Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast. Its reference point sits at approximately 6.8781 S, 39.2026 E, with a field elevation of 171 feet above mean sea level.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways. The main runway, 05/23, is 10,349 feet long with a hard surface, is lit, and is served by an ILS on runway 05. The secondary runway, 14/32, is a shorter hard-surfaced strip of around 3,244 feet, also lit, providing a crosswind option alongside the main runway.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services at Julius Nyerere International Airport include Area Control (ACC) on 119.3 MHz, Approach/Control (APP/CON) on 119.6 MHz, and Tower (TWR) on 118.3 MHz. The main runway, 05, is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

The airport dates back to October 1954. It operated for decades as Dar es Salaam International Airport before being renamed in October 2005 in honour of Julius Nyerere, becoming Julius Nyerere International Airport on 1 November 2006. Between 1980 and 2004 the airport handled over 9.5 million passengers, and traffic grew steadily through the following decade. In April 2013 the Tanzania Airports Authority signed a contract with BAM International of the Netherlands for the first phase of a new Terminal III, with a second phase awarded in November 2015; the terminal was built using domestic funding and began operations in August 2019, intended to serve international flights while Terminal II was devoted to domestic traffic.

The Airfield Today

The airport now comprises three terminals. Terminal 1 is used mainly for private, charter and small aircraft flights, with a new VIP terminal completed in January 2026 for high-profile and state passengers. Terminal 2 handles domestic and regional scheduled flights and has been earmarked for major renovation to become a modern hub for Air Tanzania. Terminal 3, opened in August 2019, handles international flights. The airport continues to see infrastructure development, including proposals for a hotel and commercial complex on the airport estate.
