Kilimanjaro International Airport (HTKJ/JRO) is Tanzania's principal gateway to the northern safari circuit, sitting on the plains between Arusha and Moshi beneath the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its single long paved runway and ILS-equipped approach make it capable of handling wide-body jets as well as the general aviation and charter traffic that supports the region's tourism industry. For a simulator pilot, it offers a striking approach with Kilimanjaro and Meru often visible on the horizon.

Overview

Kilimanjaro International Airport serves as the main aerial gateway to northern Tanzania's tourism circuit, connecting visitors to Kilimanjaro National Park, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. It is owned by the Government of Tanzania and operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority. The field is of particular interest to simulator pilots for its long single runway, its ILS approach, and its dramatic setting on the plains below Mount Kilimanjaro, roughly between the towns of Arusha and Moshi.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, on the plains east/southeast of Arusha and west of Moshi. It serves both cities as well as the Kilimanjaro National Park and the wider northern tourist circuit, and is the largest airport in northern Tanzania.

Runways

Kilimanjaro International Airport has one physical runway, 09/27, a hard-surfaced strip 11,767 feet in length. The runway is lit, and an ILS is available for approaches to runway 09.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include APPROACH on 119.9 MHz and 120.1 MHz, an ATIS broadcast on 126.6 MHz, and TOWER on 120.1 MHz. An ILS serves runway 09.

History

Kilimanjaro International Airport opened on 2 December 1971, its construction costing around US$13 million and financed by a long-term loan from the Italian government. In 1998 it became the first international airport in Africa to be privatised, operating for a period under the Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company before later coming under the Tanzania Airports Authority. In February 2014 the governments of Tanzania and the Netherlands signed an agreement to rehabilitate the airport's aprons, taxiways and terminal building, a project costing an estimated €35.5 million. Renovation work began in November 2015, carried out by BAM International, a subsidiary of the Royal BAM Group, at a cost of US$39.7 million, with the aim of doubling passenger capacity from 600,000 to 1.2 million a year.

The Airfield Today

The airport remains owned by the Government of Tanzania and is operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority. Its runway, at almost 11,800 feet, is long enough to accommodate aircraft as large as the Boeing 747 and Antonov 124, and it continues to handle a mix of scheduled international airline services, charter flights and general aviation traffic supporting the northern Tanzania tourism industry.
