Aberdeen Regional Airport (KABR) is a city-owned, public-use airport in Brown County, South Dakota, used predominantly for general aviation alongside a single scheduled airline operation, Delta Connection flights operated by SkyWest Airlines to Minneapolis-St Paul. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot it is a quiet, easily managed field with a full-length hard-surfaced runway, an instrument approach, and comparatively little traffic to contend with.
The airport lies about two nautical miles east of the central business district of Aberdeen, South Dakota. Enroute traffic in the area is worked by Minneapolis Center on 120.6 MHz.
The airport has two paved, lit runways. Runway 13/31 is 6,884 feet long with a hard surface and lit; runway 31 is equipped with an ILS. Runway 17/35 is 5,474 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit.
Weather is available on the ASOS at 125.875 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency is 122.7 MHz, with a remote radio outlet to Huron Radio on 122.4 MHz for flight service. UNICOM operates on 122.95 MHz, and Minneapolis Center can be reached on 120.6 MHz for IFR traffic in the surrounding airspace. Runway 31 has an ILS approach.
The airport traces its origins to 1921, when it was established as Aberdeen Municipal Airport north of the city, initially with two 2,500-foot runways and basic ground services. Security Skycraft Corporation began scheduled flights from the field at a fare of 50 cents per mile. In 1946 the airport was renamed Saunders Field in honour of Brigadier General Laverne Saunders, and although the airport's official name reverted to Aberdeen Municipal Airport in 1979, the airfield area is still known locally as Saunders Field. The field was developed into a commercial airport, with North Central Airlines operating DC-9-30, DC-3 and Convair CV-580 aircraft on services to Minneapolis.
Aberdeen Regional Airport today combines general aviation activity with a daily Delta Connection service to Minneapolis-St Paul, operated by SkyWest Airlines; this replaced a long-running CRJ200 operation in October 2023, since followed by CRJ700, CRJ900 and CRJ550 equipment. General aviation accounts for the large majority of movements, with 66 aircraft based on the field, including 42 single-engine and 16 multi-engine piston aircraft, 7 jets and 1 helicopter. The terminal is noted for its small scale, with a single gate, short security lines and free short- and long-term parking.
