It is included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems as a general aviation airport, and for a sim pilot it offers a scenic, mountain-valley approach with a single lit hard-surfaced runway and no tower to contend with.
The airport lies in Lincoln County, Wyoming, one nautical mile southwest of the town of Afton, within the Star Valley. There is no control tower on the field, and traffic is worked by pilots themselves on the common frequency. Salt Lake City Center provides en-route air traffic control in the surrounding airspace, and NOTAM and flight service support is tied to Casper.
Afton Municipal Airport has one physical runway, 16/34, of hard surface construction measuring 6,984 feet in length and lit for night operations.
There is no control tower; traffic is coordinated on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.8 MHz. Weather information is available from an AWOS-3 station on 119.025 MHz. A remote communications outlet at 122.3 MHz provides access to Casper radio for flight service assistance, and Salt Lake City Center works en-route traffic on 128.35 MHz. Afton Flight Services has operated as the airport's fixed-base operator.
