Gratiot Community Airport is a public-use general aviation field in south-central Michigan, sited midway between the towns of Alma and Ithaca in Gratiot County. It offers a full-length paved primary runway and a shorter crosswind runway, with self-serve fuel and FBO support making it a practical stop for visiting pilots in the region.

Overview

Gratiot Community Airport is a publicly owned general aviation airport serving Alma, Michigan, and the surrounding Gratiot County area. It is jointly owned by the City of Alma and Gratiot County and is included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems as a local general aviation facility. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a straightforward, uncontrolled field with a long paved runway, an active FBO, and round-the-clock self-serve fuel.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about three nautical miles southwest of the centre of Alma, Michigan, between the towns of Alma and Ithaca, and close to U.S. Highway 127. It is an uncontrolled airfield with no on-field air traffic control tower; Saginaw Approach/Departure provides the relevant terminal radar service in the surrounding airspace.

Runways

Gratiot Community Airport has two paved runways. Runway 09/27 is 4,958 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 18/36 is 3,172 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit. Field elevation is 751 feet. There is no ILS at the airport.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic should monitor and use 122.8 MHz, which serves as both CTAF and UNICOM. Saginaw Approach/Departure operates on 126.45 MHz for arriving and departing IFR and radar-service traffic. An AWOS-3 automated weather observation is available on 124.175 MHz, and clearance delivery is provided on 119.25 MHz.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As an uncontrolled field, standard non-towered traffic pattern procedures apply, with pilots making position reports and coordinating on the 122.8 MHz CTAF/UNICOM frequency.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits along Seaman Road between Alma and Ithaca, and is close to U.S. Highway 127, which provides a useful linear reference for pilots inbound from the north or south.

History

Gratiot Community Airport is owned by the City of Alma and Gratiot County and is recognised by the FAA as a local general aviation facility within the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. The field covers 631 acres. Two notable incidents are recorded in its history: on 23 July 2010 a Cessna U206F Stationair ditched after departing the airport when it suffered a loss of power from fuel starvation caused by debris in the fuel system, and on 28 May 2022 a Piper PA-28 Cherokee made a forced landing in a nearby field after a series of mechanical issues, possibly related to a fuel pump fault, while attempting to reach the airport.

The Airfield Today

The airport is staffed between 8 am and 6 pm and is served by Three Point Aviation, LLC as the fixed-base operator, handling day-to-day operations. Self-serve fuel, both 100LL and Jet A, is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Facilities include hangar and aircraft rentals, a courtesy car, and a crew lounge. In the twelve months to December 2019 the airport recorded around 9,500 general aviation operations, averaging 26 per day, with 35 aircraft based on the field, comprising 29 single-engine and 6 multi-engine types.
