Harriet Alexander Field is a small municipal airfield serving Salida, Colorado, sitting at high elevation in the Arkansas River valley of the Rockies. It is a modest general aviation field popular with local pilots, glider enthusiasts and visitors flying in for community fly-in events, and it offers a single hard-surfaced runway suited to light aircraft operations.

Overview

Harriet Alexander Field is a small, city-operated general aviation airfield serving the town of Salida in Chaffee County, Colorado. It sits at a high elevation of 7,451 feet, which gives it the thin-air, density-altitude characteristics typical of Rocky Mountain airfields, and it is used by local pilots, visiting glider crews and aircraft attending community fly-in and airshow events.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies close to Salida in Chaffee County, Colorado, within the mountainous terrain of the upper Arkansas River valley. The nearest airport with scheduled services is at Gunnison, roughly 77 kilometres to the west.

Runways

The field has a single physical runway, 06/24, surfaced in hard pavement, 7,326 feet in length and lit for night operations. There is no ILS approach at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can obtain automated weather via the AWOS on 133.85 MHz. The field operates as an uncontrolled airfield with a CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.7 MHz for traffic advisories and self-announced calls.

History

Harriet Alexander Field has for some years operated under a grant-sharing agreement with three other regional airports, including Buena Vista, under which a single facility receives a rotating annual funding allocation of around 600,000 dollars for infrastructure projects; Salida was due to receive this allocation in 2020. The airport has hosted community aviation events including the Salida Airport Summer Fly-in and airshows, and has attracted visiting glider pilots, including a group from the Boulder Soaring Club who used the field for a week of late-summer soaring.

The Airfield Today

Under the management of Airport Manager Zech Papp, the airport has expanded its services and by around 2020 had almost fully developed its hangar capacity, with only a couple of spaces remaining and plans to expand the taxiway to accommodate further growth. Two courtesy vehicles are kept at the field for pilots and passengers to drive into Salida. The field continues to support general aviation traffic, glider operations and community fly-in events.
