Alpena County Regional Airport is a county-owned, joint civil-military airport in northern Michigan, six nautical miles west of Alpena off M-32. It combines scheduled Delta Air Lines service, operated by SkyWest, with military flying training as home to one of only four National Guard Combat Readiness Training Centers in the United States, making it an unusually varied field for a visiting light-aircraft pilot to study.
Alpena County Regional Airport (KAPN) is a commercial air carrier airport owned and operated by Alpena County and licensed by the State of Michigan. It sits alongside the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, a National Guard facility that shares the airfield's runways and airspace and trains more than 20,000 personnel a year, giving the field a joint civil-military character that a sim pilot will notice in both its long runways and its mix of commercial, general aviation and military traffic. Delta Air Lines, operated by SkyWest, provides daily scheduled flights to Detroit.
The airport lies six nautical miles (about seven miles by road) west of the central business district of Alpena, Michigan, off M-32, at an elevation of 682 feet. Its co-location with the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center means the surrounding airspace is used extensively for military training, ground manoeuvre exercises and advanced flying training alongside civil operations.
KAPN has two paired hard-surfaced runways, both lit. Runway 01/19 is 8,977 feet long and is equipped with an ILS on runway 01. Runway 07/25 is 5,019 feet long, serving as the crosswind runway.
Air-to-ground and approach/departure services are provided on 128.425 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency and tower frequency are both 121.35 MHz, with ground control on 121.9 MHz. ASOS weather is broadcast on 120.675 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz for aviation services such as fuelling, ground power and transportation coordination. A remote radio outlet listed as RDO 108.8 MHz links to Lansing Radio, and a low-frequency PTD facility operates on 37.22 MHz. Runway 01 is served by an ILS approach.
The airport is a readily identifiable landmark alongside M-32 to the west of Alpena, with its long north/south runway and crosswind runway visible from a distance against the surrounding Northern Michigan terrain.
Alpena County Regional Airport was founded after the First World War and formally dedicated in 1931. The US Army Air Corps used the airfield for training purposes until 1947, when it was handed over to Alpena County. Notable aircraft including the Boeing B-29 Superfortress and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator have made stops at the airport for public access. The field's continuing military connection is reflected today in its role as one of only four US National Guard Combat Readiness Training Centers.
KAPN remains a commercial air carrier airport owned and operated by Alpena County, offering daily Delta Air Lines flights to Detroit operated by SkyWest alongside general aviation and military training activity from the co-located Combat Readiness Training Center. General aviation services include fuelling with both 100LL and Jet A, ground power, lavatory and baggage services, potable water delivery, catering and transportation coordination, coordinated through UNICOM on 122.95 MHz. The airport occupies more than 3,000 acres and includes a recently rebuilt passenger terminal.
