Astoria Regional Airport (KAST) is a joint civil-military airfield in Warrenton, Oregon, three miles southwest of Astoria near the mouth of the Columbia River. It is home to Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and serves as a general aviation hub for the north Oregon coast, with an ILS approach to one of its three paired runways.

Overview

Astoria Regional Airport is a joint civil-military public airport in Warrenton, Oregon, owned by the Port of Astoria and best known as the home of Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, which operates HH-60 helicopters on search-and-rescue duties along the Oregon and Washington coasts. There are no scheduled airline flights, and the field's traffic is dominated by general aviation, military helicopter movements and some air taxi activity, making it a straightforward and interesting VFR destination for visiting pilots exploring the mouth of the Columbia River.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Warrenton, Oregon, about three miles southwest of the city of Astoria in Clatsop County, close to the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Traffic in the surrounding airspace is handled by Seattle Center, and the field itself operates without a control tower, with pilots using CTAF/UNICOM for self-announced arrivals and departures.

Runways

Astoria has three physical runway pairs, all with hard, lit surfaces. Runway 08/26 is the longest, with runway 08 measuring 5490 feet and runway 26 measuring 5079 feet; runway 26 is equipped with an ILS. Runway 14/32 offers 4657 feet on the 14 threshold and 4457 feet on the 32 threshold. Runway 04/22 is the shortest pairing, at 3724 feet in each direction. Field elevation is 10 feet.

Radio & Navigation

An ASOS provides automated weather on 135.375 MHz. Seattle Center handles en-route and approach services on 124.2 MHz. McMinnville Radio, part of the flight service network, can be contacted on 122.3 MHz, which also serves as the Coast Guard air station's operating frequency. CTAF/UNICOM for airport traffic is 122.8 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 26.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits close to the mouth of the Columbia River, with the city of Astoria a few miles to the northeast and the coastal communities of Seaside and Cannon Beach a short distance to the south, all useful as general orientation points when approaching from the coast.

History

Astoria Regional Airport has long combined civil and military use, and it remains home to Coast Guard Air Station Astoria. The field once hosted scheduled airline service: West Coast Airlines and its successors served Astoria until 1974-75, and SeaPort Airlines later operated flights to Portland International Airport from March 2008 until spring 2010, after which scheduled passenger service ended.

The Airfield Today

Astoria Regional Airport is operated by the Port of Astoria as a general aviation facility with no scheduled airline service. In the year ending September 2019 it recorded 38,721 aircraft operations, split roughly 59 percent general aviation, 36 percent military and 4 percent air taxi, with 36 aircraft based on the field, including single and multi-engine aircraft, helicopters and military types. The Coast Guard station on the airfield maintains HH-60 rescue helicopters supporting motor lifeboat stations on the Oregon and Washington coasts, and an industrial park adjacent to the airport supports further aviation-related development.
