Appleton International Airport (KATW) is a controlled commercial airport in Greenville, Wisconsin, about three nautical miles west of Appleton, serving the Fox Cities region. It offers two intersecting runways, both equipped with ILS approaches, making it a straightforward destination for instrument or visual training flights in the flight simulator. The field is also home to Air Wisconsin and a major Gulfstream Aerospace maintenance and completions facility.
Appleton International Airport, ICAO code KATW, is a public airport serving Appleton and the surrounding Fox Cities area of Wisconsin. It is owned jointly by Outagamie and Winnebago Counties and operates as a small-hub commercial field with scheduled airline service. For a simulator pilot it is a useful destination thanks to its two crossing hard-surfaced runways, both fitted with ILS, and its long history as a base for Air Wisconsin and, more recently, Allegiant Air. The airport is also notable as the site of a major Gulfstream Aerospace facility handling completions and painting for the company's large-cabin business jets.
The airport lies in the town of Greenville, Wisconsin, roughly three nautical miles west of Appleton. It is a towered field, with Appleton Ground and Appleton Tower providing local air traffic services and Green Bay Approach/Departure handling arrivals and departures into the surrounding airspace on 126.3 MHz.
Appleton International has two physical runways crossing in an X pattern. Runway 03/21 is 7,991 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting, with an ILS serving runway 03. Runway 12/30 is 6,491 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, with an ILS serving runway 30. Field elevation is 883 feet.
Appleton Ground operates on 121.7 MHz and Appleton Tower on 119.6 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. The ATIS broadcasts on 127.15 MHz, and UNICOM is available on 122.95 MHz. Green Bay Approach/Departure provides the overlying terminal radar service on 126.3 MHz. Both runway ends, 03 and 30, are served by ILS approaches.
The current airport was built beginning in 1963 on a site distinct from Appleton's earlier 1920s airfield, George A. Whiting Field. The facility was dedicated on August 22, 1965, opening with the 5,200-foot runway 12/30, and Air Wisconsin began operations from the field the very next day. The airport was originally known as Outagamie County Regional Airport. It became the original home of Midwest Airlines, which grew out of Kimberly-Clark's K-C Aviation subsidiary before that operation was sold in 1998 to Gulfstream Aerospace, which retains a major facility on the airport to this day. After several unsuccessful proposals dating back to 1983, the airport was officially renamed Appleton International Airport in 2015, with the change taking effect on August 21 that year during the field's fiftieth-anniversary celebrations.
Appleton International today handles scheduled airline traffic and is an operating base for Allegiant Air, which maintains an Airbus A320 crew and maintenance base at the field. It also hosts Air Wisconsin, a privately owned regional airline for which the airport is the main base, and a substantial Gulfstream Aerospace facility supporting maintenance, interior completions and exterior painting for the manufacturer's G600, G650 and G700 aircraft. As of 2024 the airport had 74 based aircraft, comprising single-engine, multi-engine and jet types.
