Neil Armstrong Airport (KAXV) is a county-owned general aviation field near New Knoxville, Ohio, about eight nautical miles southwest of Wapakoneta, the birthplace of its namesake astronaut. It offers two lit hard-surfaced runways and CTAF/UNICOM-only operations, making it a straightforward VFR destination for private and recreational pilots in west-central Ohio.
Neil Armstrong Airport is a public-use, general aviation airport owned and operated by the Auglaize County Airport Authority. It is named for Neil Armstrong, the astronaut and first person to walk on the Moon, who grew up in nearby Wapakoneta. The field handles recreational, corporate and private traffic and is listed in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems as a general aviation facility, giving a sim pilot a quiet, uncontrolled Midwestern airfield with a strong personal connection to the history of flight.
The airport lies in New Knoxville, Ohio, roughly eight nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Wapakoneta. It is an uncontrolled field for local traffic purposes, with Dayton Approach/Departure providing services on 134.45 MHz for aircraft operating in the surrounding airspace.
The airport has two runways. Runway 08/26 is a hard-surfaced, lit runway measuring 4,791 feet on the runway 08 designation and 5,252 feet on the runway 26 designation. There is no ILS approach at the field. Field elevation is 909 feet.
Dayton Approach/Departure is available on 134.45 MHz. The airport has an AWOS-3 automated weather observation on 128.325 MHz. A remote communications outlet, Dayton RDO, operates on 117.5 MHz. Common traffic advisory frequency and unicom are combined on 122.8 MHz.
The airport sits along State Route 219 near New Knoxville, roughly eight nautical miles southwest of Wapakoneta, which serves as a useful landmark for pilots inbound from the northeast.
The origins of the airfield trace back to N.K. Airport, Inc., incorporated in June 1955 to purchase land for an airport east of New Knoxville; a hangar was under construction by April 1959 with runway lighting planned to follow. Plans for what became Neil Armstrong Airport were announced on 13 April 1966 by Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes during a homecoming event for Armstrong following his Gemini 8 mission. The airport was formally founded in 1968, beginning life with a grass runway before being progressively expanded. On 24 July 1975 a twin-engine Beechcraft made an emergency landing in a field shortly after departing the airport, and on 8 March 2014 a Cessna 310 suffered a nose-compartment fire while taxiing following an otherwise uneventful flight. A new 4,700-square-foot terminal building was completed in 2020. In April 2024 the field hosted nearly 90 aircraft whose pilots flew in to view a total solar eclipse, and in August 2025 a jet engine from a Learjet 28 once tested by Neil Armstrong was loaned to the airport for display.
Neil Armstrong Airport remains an authority-operated general aviation facility averaging around 20 flights a day, with hangar rental space and published fuel pricing and facility fees. The airport authority has also been developing a master plan for future terminal and facility improvements. It continues to attract transient general aviation, air taxi and local traffic, and hosted a notable gathering of visiting aircraft for the 2024 solar eclipse.
