Boulder Municipal Airport is a city-owned general aviation field on the northeastern edge of Boulder, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rockies just east of the Continental Divide. Founded in 1928, it is Colorado's oldest continuously operating public airport and today serves light aircraft, business flying and an active gliding community, with no scheduled airline service.

Overview

Boulder Municipal Airport is a public, city-owned general aviation airport situated about three miles northeast of downtown Boulder, Colorado. It handles business, private, recreational and emergency general aviation traffic and has no commercial airline service. The airport is well known among sailplane pilots: its position in the foothills of the Rockies, just east of the Continental Divide, produces strong and reliable lift, and the field is home to the Soaring Society of Boulder, making it a natural draw for glider pilots as well as powered GA visitors.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies roughly three miles (4.8 km) northeast of Boulder's central business district, in Boulder County, Colorado, at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Denver International Airport, around 40 miles to the east, is the nearest field handling large commercial jets; visiting college teams and other operators needing larger aircraft use Denver rather than Boulder. The city controls surrounding land use and airport ground procedures under its Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan and Airport Master Plan, while aircraft operations in the air remain under FAA jurisdiction.

Runways

Boulder Municipal has a single paved runway, 08/26, with a hard surface and runway lighting. Published lengths are 3,876 ft for runway 08 and 4,074 ft for runway 26. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid at the field.

Radio & Navigation

The airport is uncontrolled and served by a CTAF/UNICOM frequency of 122.725 MHz, with the call sign 'Boulder traffic' used for radio calls. There is no published instrument approach.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Boulder Municipal is a non-towered airport, and the City of Boulder publishes a specific traffic pattern for the field as part of its airport operating procedures, reflecting the surrounding terrain and residential proximity; pilots should follow the published pattern and use the 122.725 MHz CTAF to coordinate with other traffic in the absence of ATC.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits about three miles northeast of downtown Boulder, with the rising foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the Continental Divide immediately to the west, a useful landmark for inbound pilots approaching from the Front Range.

History

Founded in 1928, Boulder Municipal Airport is Colorado's oldest operating public airport. It has long been used almost exclusively for general aviation rather than scheduled airline services. The FAA and IATA use different three-letter identifiers for the field - BDU to the FAA (formerly 1V5) and WBU to IATA, since the code BDU had already been assigned to Bardufoss Airport in Norway. The airport has also hosted visiting collegiate basketball teams flying in for games against the University of Colorado, though football teams requiring larger charter aircraft use Denver International Airport instead.

The Airfield Today

Boulder Municipal remains a general aviation airport owned by the City of Boulder, with no commercial airline service. It supports business, private, recreational and emergency flying, and hosts extensive gliding activity as the base of the Soaring Society of Boulder. The field covers about 136 acres and has an executive terminal operated by Journeys Aviation. As of the most recent published FAA figures, the airport recorded some 56,629 aircraft operations a year, averaging 155 per day, with 59 based aircraft comprising single-engine, multi-engine and glider types.
