Laurence G Hanscom Field lies in Bedford, Massachusetts, a few miles northwest of Boston along the Route 128 technology corridor, and serves as the region's principal reliever airport for Boston Logan International. Operated by Massport, it is a busy general aviation and corporate field with two long, lit paved runways and full instrument approach capability, making it a practical and well-equipped destination for visiting simulator pilots.

Overview

Hanscom Field is a general aviation and corporate airport at Bedford, Massachusetts, operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). It functions as the principal reliever airport for Boston Logan International, handling a mix of private, corporate and flight-training traffic rather than scheduled airline service. Its proximity to the Greater Boston high-technology corridor along Route 128 makes it a busy and well-used field for a simulator pilot flying in the Boston area.

Airspace & Location

The field sits in the Boston terminal area, close to Boston's Class B airspace, and traffic is worked by Boston Approach/Departure on 124.4 MHz. Hanscom itself is a controlled aerodrome with its own tower, and it lies northwest of Boston in Bedford, Massachusetts, adjacent to the Route 128 corridor.

Runways

Hanscom has two paved, lit physical runways. Runway 11/29 is the longer of the two, at 6990 to 6991 feet, and is equipped with an ILS. Runway 05/23 is 5105 feet long and lit but without an instrument landing system.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect the following frequencies at Hanscom: ATIS on 124.6 MHz, Clearance Delivery on 121.85 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz, and Tower on 118.5 MHz, which also serves as the CTAF. Unicom is available on 122.95 MHz, and Boston Approach/Departure works arriving and departing traffic on 124.4 MHz. Runway 11/29 is served by an ILS.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Pilots operating at Hanscom are advised to run transponders with altitude reporting mode and ADS-B, where equipped, enabled across all airport surfaces. Several taxiways are restricted by aircraft wingspan, including closures to aircraft greater than 118 feet wingspan between taxiways E and G south of taxiway M, and restrictions on taxiways R1 and R2 to aircraft no larger than 49 feet wingspan.

History

Hanscom Field was established in 1941 as a military aviation hub, later known as Hanscom Air Force Base, before evolving into a civilian regional airport. Today it caters to a diverse mix of users including corporate aviation, private pilots and flight schools.

The Airfield Today

Hanscom Field operates as a full-service general aviation airport and serves as Boston's principal reliever airport for corporate and private traffic. It supports a broad mix of corporate aviation, private pilots and flight training activity, with FBO services available on the field, including Atlantic Aviation.
