KBUF has two physical runways. Runway 05/23 is a hard-surfaced, lit runway with an ILS, measuring 8293 ft when flown as runway 05 and 8103 ft as runway 23. Runway 14/32 is also hard-surfaced and lit, measuring 6828 ft as runway 14 and 6429 ft as runway 32, with an ILS available on runway 32. Field elevation is 702 ft.
Radio services at Buffalo include Air/Ground on 126.15 MHz, Buffalo Approach/Departure, ATIS on 135.35 MHz, a Clearance Delivery function on 124.7 MHz, Ground on 133.2 MHz, a general radio frequency on 122.6 MHz, and Tower on 120.5 MHz. Buffalo Niagara International Airport traces its origins to 1926, when it opened as Buffalo Municipal Airport on former farmland, making it one of the oldest public airports in the United States. The original field had a small terminal, a single hangar, and four cinder runways each 3,000 feet long and 100 feet wide. Scheduled passenger and mail service began in December 1927 with a route to Cleveland. A WPA-built Art Deco terminal with a distinctive cylindrical tower opened in 1939, by which time the airport had four paved runways, including a 5,630-foot Runway 5/23 and a 5,730-foot Runway 13/31 (later renumbered 14/32). Runways 1/19 and 8/26 were closed during the 1950s. In 1959 the City of Buffalo transferred ownership to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, and the field was renamed Greater Buffalo International Airport. The first scheduled jet service, an American Airlines Boeing 727 route to New York, began in 1965, the same year Runway 5/23 was extended to 8,100 feet. A large Curtiss-Wright manufacturing plant stood on the airport's southeast side from 1941; after later use by Westinghouse and private developers, the building was demolished in 1999 to allow Runway 14/32 to be lengthened. In 2006 the main runway was repaved and extended by 750 feet, and the secondary runway was lengthened by 1,000 feet. A new terminal, developed by a joint venture including Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, CannonDesign, and William Nicholas Bodouva, opened in November 1997 with 15 gates, replacing the earlier East and West Terminal buildings.
Today Buffalo Niagara International Airport functions as a major commercial airport handling scheduled passenger service, with nonstop flights to numerous destinations and connections to wider networks, and is a focus city for Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways.
