Cessna Aircraft Field is a small, privately owned general aviation airport four nautical miles southeast of downtown Wichita, Kansas, adjacent to McConnell Air Force Base. Owned by the Cessna Aircraft Company, it serves a modest amount of light aircraft traffic and offers no facilities for transient pilots.

Overview

Cessna Aircraft Field is a privately owned public-use airfield in Sedgwick County, Kansas, sitting four nautical miles southeast of the Wichita central business district. It is owned by the Cessna Aircraft Company and sits immediately next to McConnell Air Force Base, making it an interesting but low-key destination for a simulator pilot exploring Wichita's rich general aviation heritage.

Airspace & Location

The field lies in Sedgwick County, Kansas, four nautical miles southeast of downtown Wichita, and is sited directly adjacent to McConnell Air Force Base. Traffic in the area is worked by Wichita Approach/Departure on 134.8 MHz, with clearance delivery available on 125 MHz, reflecting the field's proximity to the busier controlled airspace surrounding Wichita and McConnell. Other Wichita-area airports nearby include Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Colonel James Jabara Airport, Beech Factory Airport and Westport Airport.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 17/35, with a hard, lit surface measuring approximately 3,720 feet in length. There is no ILS available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic can be worked on the common traffic advisory frequency of 122.9 MHz. Wichita Approach/Departure is available on 134.8 MHz and clearance delivery on 125 MHz. McConnell Tower, covering the adjacent Air Force Base, operates on 127.25 MHz. No instrument landing system or other navaids are published for the field.

Visual Reference Points

The most useful visual reference for locating the field is McConnell Air Force Base, immediately adjacent to the airport, along with the Wichita central business district some four nautical miles to the northwest.

History

Cessna Aircraft Field was established as a private airfield for the Cessna Aircraft Company, one of several manufacturers that grew out of Wichita's early twentieth-century aviation boom alongside Beechcraft and Stearman. The field remains under Cessna's private ownership and has long served the company's general aviation operations from its site alongside McConnell Air Force Base.

The Airfield Today

The airport is privately owned by the Cessna Aircraft Company and handles only light general aviation activity, with around 100 aircraft operations a year and 16 aircraft based there, mostly single-engine types. There is no FBO or fuel available for transient aircraft, and pilots without business at the field should not expect to be able to stay. Prior permission is required before any visit.
