Culpeper Regional Airport (KCJR) is a county-owned public-use general aviation airport at Brandy Station, Virginia, a few miles north of the town of Culpeper. It offers a single long, lit hard-surface runway with an ILS approach, making it a useful and well-equipped stop for VFR and IFR pilots alike in the northern Virginia piedmont.

Overview

Culpeper Regional Airport, identified by the ICAO code KCJR, is a general aviation airport owned and operated by the County of Culpeper. It sits at Brandy Station, Virginia, and serves as a transportation and economic hub for Culpeper County and the surrounding communities. The airport is a lively general aviation base with resident flight training, maintenance and aviation heritage activity, giving it plenty of interest for a visiting simulator pilot.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Brandy Station, Virginia, about seven nautical miles north of the town of Culpeper. It is positioned adjacent to the Culpeper County Industrial Park and the Civil War Preservation Trust land, with State Route 29 about 1.5 miles away providing an easy ground reference. Airborne traffic in the area works with Potomac Approach/Departure, whose frequency is available for arriving and departing aircraft.

Runways

The airport has one physical runway, 04/22, a hard-surfaced strip 4,959 feet long. Both ends are lit, and runway 04 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument pilots a precision option into the field.

Radio & Navigation

Culpeper Regional Airport uses the callsign Culpeper on the field's frequencies. Potomac Approach/Departure (A/D) is available on 124.65 MHz. Field weather is broadcast on the AWOS-3 station at 120.025 MHz. A remote communications outlet, Leesburg RDO, operates on 116.3 MHz. Local traffic advisories and unicom services are provided on 123.075 MHz, which serves as the CTAF/UNICOM frequency for the airport.

History

Culpeper Regional Airport opened in 1968 on land at Brandy Station with strong Civil War associations: in the first phase of the Battle of Brandy Station, Confederate artillery was drawn up in a line whose eastern end lay on what is now the airport site, and Union cavalry charged the position before the fighting moved further north. The airport has since become a focal point for local aviation heritage, hosting the Culpeper Air Fest each October and a Quinquennial celebration marking the end of the Second World War.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport is a busy county-run general aviation field with around 300 acres of fenced property, 140 hangars, and 69 tie-down spaces on a large lit apron; roughly 156 aircraft are based there. On-field services include flight instruction, aircraft maintenance, an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, a medevac helicopter operation and an aviation museum, along with two mobile refuelling trucks dispensing Jet A and avgas. The airport also provides high-speed wireless internet and a courtesy car for short trips into town. It regularly hosts NATA formation flying clinics in spring and autumn, an annual STEM event, and the well-established Culpeper Air Fest.
