Charlotte Douglas is served by a full suite of radio facilities befitting a major hub. Approach and Departure control operates on 120.05 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 121.15 MHz. Clearance Delivery is available on 127.15 MHz, and Ground on 121.8 MHz. The Tower frequency is 118.1 MHz, and UNICOM is published on 122.95 MHz. As a major Class B hub airport handling continuous airline traffic, Charlotte Douglas does not operate on the informal circuit patterns typical of smaller general aviation fields; arriving and departing traffic is sequenced by Approach and Departure control on 120.05 MHz and handed to the Tower on 118.1 MHz for the runway environment. Charlotte Douglas traces its origins to 1935, when the city secured Works Progress Administration funding to build Charlotte's first municipal airport, at the time the largest single WPA project in the United States, comprising a terminal, hangar, beacon tower and three runways. Charlotte Municipal Airport opened in 1936 under city operation, and Eastern Air Lines began scheduled passenger service the following year. The United States Army Air Forces took over the airport in early 1941 as Charlotte Air Base, renaming it Morris Field after Pearl Harbor; the military invested more than five million dollars in airfield improvements before returning the facility to the city in 1946, during which time it was used by the Third Air Force for antisubmarine patrols and training. A new 70,000-square-foot passenger terminal opened in 1954, and the airport was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport in honour of former Charlotte Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr., who had overseen its original opening. Delta Air Lines began service in 1956, and scheduled jet flights began in early 1962 with Eastern Air Lines Boeing 720s. Further expansion followed through the 1960s and 1970s, including a new enclosed concourse in 1969 and additional Eastern gates in 1973. After airline deregulation, passenger numbers nearly doubled between 1978 and 1980, prompting a new 10,000-foot parallel runway and control tower in 1979, and in 1979 Piedmont Airlines chose Charlotte as the hub for its expanding network. A new 325,000-square-foot terminal opened in 1982, at which point the airport took its current name, Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Charlotte Douglas today operates with a single central terminal connecting five concourses and 124 gates, and it remains a fortress hub for American Airlines. The airport is a joint civil-military facility, hosting the Charlotte Air National Guard base and the 145th Airlift Wing alongside its commercial operations. It ranks among the busiest airports in the world by aircraft movements and serves a large number of destinations from its Charlotte base.
