Clearwater Air Park, recently renamed Clearwater Executive Airport, is a small city-owned general aviation field a few miles northeast of downtown Clearwater on Florida's Gulf coast. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway and straightforward CTAF/Unicom operations, making it a handy and uncomplicated stop for VFR training and touring flights in the busy Tampa Bay airspace.

Overview

Clearwater Air Park, now officially styled Clearwater Executive Airport, is a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport in Clearwater, Florida. It sits close to the shores of Tampa Bay and handles a steady flow of light single and multi-engine traffic, along with the occasional helicopter movement, making it a useful and interesting destination for simulator pilots exploring the busy Tampa Bay area outside the shadow of the larger commercial fields nearby.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies in Pinellas County, about three miles northeast of Clearwater's central business district, within the wider Tampa Bay airspace environment and under the umbrella of Tampa Approach/Departure control. It sits in proximity to St Pete-Clearwater International Airport and the other busier fields ringing Tampa Bay, so pilots should expect to be working with Tampa's terminal radar service even when operating locally at Clearwater.

Runways

Clearwater Air Park has a single physical runway, 16/34, with a hard, lit surface. The published length is 3741 feet for runway 16 and 3243 feet for runway 34, at a field elevation of 66 feet. There is no instrument landing system at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic can expect to work Tampa Approach/Departure on 125.3 MHz for arrivals and departures in the surrounding airspace. On the ground and in the local pattern, the airfield uses 123 MHz as its combined CTAF/Unicom frequency, there being no operating control tower.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

With no tower present, arriving and departing traffic self-announces and coordinates on the 123 MHz CTAF/Unicom frequency. Takeoffs and landings at the field are permitted between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Visual Reference Points

The field is located roughly three miles northeast of downtown Clearwater, giving pilots a clear visual reference in the built-up shoreline area of the city as they approach from over Tampa Bay or the surrounding Pinellas County suburbs.

History

The airpark has long operated as a city-owned public-use facility for Clearwater. Management passed to FlyUSA Inc. on 1 March 2023, and on 31 March 2025 the Clearwater City Council formally approved renaming the airpark to Clearwater Executive Airport. The field's operational history includes a serious accident on 1 February 2024, when a Beechcraft Bonanza V35 on approach to runway 34 suffered engine trouble and crashed into a nearby mobile home park, resulting in a post-impact fire, damage to four homes, and fatalities both aboard the aircraft and on the ground.

The Airfield Today

Clearwater Executive Airport remains an active general aviation field, with recent annual activity of over 50,000 aircraft operations, almost entirely general aviation traffic, averaging around 139 movements a day. Some 36 aircraft are based there, comprising mostly single-engine types along with a handful of multi-engine aircraft and one helicopter. The field has been managed by FlyUSA Inc. since March 2023 and operates within permitted flying hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
